Anybody figured out how to get this combo working?

Current status: I have dialup access working (iPAQ to V600 via Bluetooth, connection type "bluetooth dialup modem", dials out to Earthlink). Also, the phone itself can connect via GPRS to get mail from my Earthlink account to its own mail client.

But, have NOT been able to get the CingularGPRS service working between the iPAQ and the CingularGPRS. Account is set up properly with Cingular (worked on prior Nokia), have the latest Cingular settings doc, etc: *99#, ISPDA.CINGULARGPRS.COM, CINGULAR1, WAP.CINGULAR. However, after trying for a while to connect, PPC2003 reports "modem disconnected". Have tried other params: *99***1#, GPRS0, WAP.CINGULARGPRS.COM etc, same result.

Looks as if there may be another way to set up: besides the one above using Bluetooth Dialup Modem, and there is also a connection type "bluetooth" listed when setting up a connection; however, during setup of a connection using that, PPC2003 reports "there is no Bluetooth hardware" altho the iPAQ has (functioning) Bluetooth hardware built in.

Any clues to making this work in either config? When I get it figured out I'll get the configs back to Cingular/HP/Motorola. Their support groups have little info about setting such a combo altho there must be several people who have this config!

Thanks in advance -- Dick Bixler

I have found this thread which has detailed settings on tethering your ipaq to a cingular bluetooth phone. I have tried these settings and they do work.

For your convenience, I am posting the relevant part of the discussion here.

1. ISP.CINGULAR this is the APN that has the compression software to make browsing faster this apn is set up for using data connect software THIS IS NOT THAT APN THAT YOU GET ACCESS TO WITH MEDIA WORKS. You must have a specific feature code on your account to gain access to this apn and Unlimited access to this apn is 74.99 a month. I will list the settings for each at the end of the post.

2. WAP.CINGULAR this APN doesn't use any compression and is originally designed for "over the phone access" This is the APN that you have access to with the MEdia works package that gives you Unl. GPRS usage.

The APN that you log into is how you will be billed so if you have access to the WAP.CINGULAR apn then you have unlimited GRPS usage. I tested this personally I have unlimited access to ISP.CINGULAR and WAP.CINGULAR my wifes account only has 5MB of data using WAP.CINGULAR. She doesn't have the correct features to access the ISP.CINGULAR APN so when i used her phone to browse via my iPAQ then I was using the WAP.CINGULAR APN!

Ok so here are the settings and I am sure they have been posted elsewhere but if you have an iPAQ you can use these verbatim and browse via BT and you phone's GPRS connection as much as you want!

SETTINGS FOR WAP.CINGULAR (remember these are specifically for the iPAQ so you will have to take what you need and disregard the rest)

Connection Name: whatever you want i named mine wap.cingular
Modem: bluetooth dialup modem
Phone number: *99***1# (turn dialing rules off)
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (case sensitive)
Password: CINGULAR1 (case sensitive)
**click advanced tab**
Baud rate: whatever i use 19200
uncheck wait for dial tone before dialing
Extra dial string: +CGDCONT=1,"IP","WAP.CINGULAR" (case sensitive and that is an O not a zero)
All other settings leave default (port settings, TCP/IP, Servers)

SETTINGS FOR ISP.CINGULAR

Name: whatever
Modem Bluetooth Dialup modem
Phone Number: *99***1# (dialing rules off again)
Username: WIXDC001@W5.MYCINGULAR.COM
Password: ZXY203DCPK0402 (both of those are case sensitive and those are zero's not O's)
**click advanced tab**
Baud rate: whatever i use 19200
uncheck wait for dial tone before dialing
Extra dial string: +CGDCONT=1,"IP","ISP.CINGULAR" (case sensitive and that is an O not a zero)
All other settings leave default (port settings, TCP/IP, Servers)
