yes, and from what i read in another forum here, the PocketPC drivers are less than stable.
Also concerned about sandisk's statement that the current the sdio card needs to draw to run the wifi transmitter is rather high and will void some manufacturer's warrunties...

all i want is a PDA that does both wifi and bluetooth, and will sync with my desktop Linux PC.

Sigh...let us try again, this time without saying sh1te (damn your filter Mauricio!).

The lack of decent sync support for Palm or PPC has always ruled out Linux for me. MacOS X is getting tempting though...

And there's always the TH55. But for Sony's running from the market and the lack of oomph it's a nice wee toy. Funky organiser too. Or, as Mauricio says, there's the 4150, but it's puny 240x320 puts me off. Otherwise, if you like PPC, it's cheap and has a nice form factor.

SyncE, last i looked was onyl a beta, and i couldn't get it to compile regardless...

Palm Os + linux, IMO, is much nicer to use than the PalmOS + windows combo. Many little nicities like time syncing, and being able to just install the one file without syncing everything.. eg, i can put my friend's palm in my PC's cradle and just install a file - no need to set up partnerships (or whatever they're called in palm os world) and needlessly sync their entire PDA. I'm also spoilt for choice of what PIM i want to use. Last time i sync my palm with a windows machine, i could sync with either MS Outlook, or Palm own desktop program.
On linux I use Multi sync.. i use it as a base place to store my PIM stuff, and from there sync with my cellphones, PDA, Evolution @ work, and kontact @ home...

What part of the linux -> palm OS syncing didn't you like?

Complexity, more than anything.

On Windows, I install Palm Desktop and it works. These days I install Outlook and use it as a sync point, so I can sync with my Nokia as well. You can install third party programs to do one file installs as well, but I generally don't bother.

On Linux, I found Evolution sync was easy to set up BUT I couldn't have a password set on my device. Also, I despise Evolution (and will until it has CSS support) and much prefer Thunderbird, so that wasn't much help. However, the real problem is third party conduits - WorldMate (which also does TimeSync), eWallet, Dilbert (Dose-a-day), Acrobat Reader and the biggy - Documents to Go.

Finally, there's the laziness factor. When I was at Uni at had time to waste, I loved Linux, BeOS and FreeBSD (and even installed OS/2 Warp 4 one day for fun). These days I spend too much time on the PC at work, have RSI and just want my home PC to go - no hassles, no effort expended. And Palm Desktop just works better there for me. At least for the present :-)

i didn't think setting up syncing was all that complex..
I need to find out where the usb cradle was appearing in devfs.. to do that i pressed the palms sync button then checked my syslog.. it says is detected a pilot connecting on /dev/ttyUSB0
now that i have this, i start my syncing software of choice (kpilot) and I configurel it to listen on /dev/ttyUSB0, and then it's all working

I also have a password on my palm - works just fine.

syncing over bluetooth was a little harder.. i had to download a new kernel, and then install is (that's a one line command).. and reboot (i hate rebooting).... then install a bunch of packages, and then it works...

To be fair, i compare this to my sister setting up bluetooth on XP - she tried this, and that.. and a bunch of other things and still hasn't got bluetooth anything to work.. gave up and installed 98.

Hmmm. Both KPilot and the GNOME version (gPilot? gnome-pilot?) both complained about my device password. This was with RedHat 8, mid last year...

Good to know they've fixed that one. One less impediment :-)

sounds to me like your problem is your distro..

Red hat is wonderfully stable - but it's also rather stale.. that's the price you pay for the stability.. many of the packages in REd Hat was 2-3 years old.
i dunno about you, but i've never owned a PDA that old. :-)

Mandrake a a great fool-proof distro.. You get scorn from those debian and slackware geeks, but I have a computer so that i can use it, not constantly maintain it ;-)

*grin* I used to use Gentoo, so I could heap scorn upon even Debian users!

But RedHat 8 was on my work machine, so out of my control. Cest la vie.
