I would like to buy a sd memory card for my HP5455. Does anyone have any information on the different manufactures or any pros and cons on 128MB and up? HP seems to have some steep prices but I have read where some of the cards are slower than others. Thanks. This is the first time I have thought about buying sd memory.

I use SanDisk and am quite happy with the cards. I have a 256 and 126. I also had a CF card from them.

I also have a Compaq SD card, bought through work so got a discount... But it's no different from the SanDisk (which I think is one of the best in the market).

Thank you for replying. I am going to also try a 256 MB SanDisk. Last time I checked they were a whole lot cheaper than HP. Then I saw a Viking (I think that what it was) so I was not sure what would be compatable.

I tried searching San Disk's web site but they did not show any kind of memory for a HP 5455. Would you be kind enough to point me on how I find the exact card I need? (256 hopefully). Thank you.

There's no specific model. Any SD or MMC card will work with your HP5450.

Hmm I have had very bad luck with Sandisk, SD cards, in fact I have there 256 MB SD card and it makes my 5455 so slow as to be unusable. I myself will stay away from Sandisk SD cards. And I still have my first Flash card which works great still, a SanDisk PCMCIA card.

I bought a 256M SD memory SanDisk new card from ebay for $68 plus shipping and handleing. Thanks for the feed back. It is awesome to have extra space now. Would anyone know if formatting it into a different cluster size would be any benifit? I have it formated at fat16 with a cluster size of 4kb. The other options are a cluster size of 8kb, 16kb and 32kb at fat16. I only have 241MB and was also wondering where the other 15MB went? Thanks again for the prompt reply as it saved me from guessing wrong!

SD means Secure Digital. It's not secure only because of the Write lock. It's secure because it contains the required code and memory controls to implement DRM (Digital Rights Management) if needed.

Parts of the total memory is used for control - that's why you don't see the whole lot.

I'm not sure about different cluster sizes. Anyone else?

Few quick pointers about Cluster sizes :

When you write a file to a disk that is say 1Kb in size, if the disk has been formated with cluster sizes of 4Kb, then that file will take up 4Kb os space on the disk and so on and so forth with 8Kb, 16Kb etc etc
The other thing to note is that there is a sweet spot with cluster sizes, a small size means the device could be doing a lot of work reading in all these little clusters (especially if the card/disk is fragemented), larger sizes means the device can read in more data in one read operation and the same for writes.

You need to decide what sort of files you are going to store on the SD card, if it's going to be lots of "notes" and other small files then set it to a smaller size to save space, if it's going to be big .mp3's and videos then set it to a larger size so that they get loaded in/written quicker.

All a balancing act.

Program I use (and it's brilliant) for formatting memory cards on my Ipaq is "Flash Format" by CnetX http://www.cnetx.com it allows you to format cards at what ever type you like (unlike the awful tool provided with PocketPC 2002), it also formats with the secondary file allocation table present so if things get pairshaped with the card it can attempt a repair.

There were also some compatibility issues with various SD Memory Modules and the 5450, they were fixed in the latest ROMPAQ v1.11.xx - SP24093
From the fix list as below:
