Nope, the CEO has advised that the focus will shift and to release a couple of models per sector eg Enterprise and Consumer which makes more sense to what they have been doing the last 12 months. The shift includes markets and carrier adjustments and hopefully more OEM's

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I'm not sure that you read the article given that the thread title doesn't relate to the content which is about the failure of Microsoft's Nokia phone hardware. Nokia phone hardware is not the same as Windows Phone software, which is what you appear to assume. The article makes this distinction when it points out that Microsoft only sold 1/4 of the phones using Windows Phone as the operating system.

EDIT: This is a much better article explaining it all in a lot more detail with graphs.

Yep. Don't think OP read the article very well.

Besides, I would rather Microsoft restructure and try something new to make WP a serious alternative.

I’d never go IPhone. Would reluctantly go android, but really not keen to get into google's ecosystem, except for using the search engine (Bing NZ has a bit of work to do).

The idea of only having android and IOS to choose from, would be a dark future.

I'm not sure that article is any better.  It reads like a Windows Phone fan boy article to me.

So Microsoft don't want to dominate the Windows Phone hardware market. So who's going to step in and fill that vacuum?  The likely candidates have left the room.

Also just remind me again what the overall Windows Phone market share is?  From memory it's less then 3% and shrinking.

This is a probably a better balanced article http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/8/8913365/microsoft-lumia-windows-phones-strategy-2015

I'd say this is the beginning of the end for Windows Phone.

On a brighter note for all those who want to stay away from the fruit there's every chance there'll Nokia phones back on the market within the near future, perhaps as soon as next year.

Microsoft recently added one of those "light up the light every time a Windows Phone is sold" to this room.

Have a watch, you'll be surprised at how often it flashes (I hope I can embed the live stream OK)

I'm not sure about that - it just looks like quite a bit of waffle and speculation.

Here's a better balanced article: http://anandtech.com/show/9424/microsoft-announces-mobile-restructuring-with-up-to-7800-job-cuts  - Reasonably short and just reporting on the facts.

I'm not sure how the author manages to spin a $7.2 billion write down as a good thing but I guess Apple fan boys aren't the only ones drinking the coolade.

I really hope Windows phone goes on as it would be bad for all if the market is left to IOS and heaven forbid Android.

It's really sad Microsoft forced Nokia to build Windows only phones, in retrospect when they bought the mobile division they could have made their phones duel boot Windows / Android. Nokia hardware has been great over the years a duel boot option could bring Android users in with their ecosystem of apps then invite them to use Windows phone you catch more with a carrot than with a stick.

Anyway its history now maybe someone can grab the remains and produce great quality Nokia Android phones with the Android fragmentation at the moment an Apple like vendor in Nokia with maybe 3 phones 'cheap' 'mid-range' and 'top range' great design and cameras etc. properly supported running vanilla nexus like versions of Android would be successful and maybe these could also run Windows Phone as an alternative.

Everything is easy when you are an armchair CEO with hindsight :)

Microsoft didn't force Nokia to do anything.

Nokia had their own problems long before we went anywhere near them.

Thinking Android or dualboot Android would be their saviour is literally an alternative universe, you're going to be squeezed between Samsung/HTC/Huawei/LG and the up and comers Xiaomi, Meizu, OnePlusOne etc.  Some of those companies are prepared to operate on negative margins.

The really sad thing is Nokia abandoned Meego.  This platform was/is much better than WP and was really the way forward for Nokia.

Nokia had some issues, mainly getting their focus right, there was too much internal friction between the Meego and Symbian teams.  They needed someone to provide some good leadership. Steve Elop didn't do that.  Instead he killed Meego and put Nokia on a dead end pathway. Some people saw him as Microsoft's Trojan Horse, I saw him as just a clumsy fool.

I love my Nokia Windows phone. I've had an HTC and two Nokia's and the build quality, battery life were far superior with the Nokia's.

It's a shame they didn't sell more. The product was good, but the marketing wasn't there to back it up.

Interesting article here.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/technology/news/article.cfm?c_id=5&objectid=11478842

This is a comment that sums up Stephen Elop.

As Tomi Ahonen has pointed out, Nokia's business was still thriving and growing after the Iphone came out. The start of the decline can be very clearly dated to Elop's absolutely stupid "burning platform" memo.
