Hi everyone,

Just thought I would make a quick post regarding the N82 for anyone who is considering getting one as their next mobile device - I see that cool mobile has it for a cool $899NZ.

Basically its an N95 in the candy bar form factor with a few things added and a few things missing, whether its your cup of tea really depends on how much the form factor suits you and how much the additions and subtractions matter to you personally.

It has the following additions:

- Xenon flash
- Doubled RAM (although effectively more than that when you look at free RAM after boot)
- Auto-rotate feature (can be added to N95, may yet be added to N95 via firmware upgrade)

It loses:
- Screen Size
- IR port (not a biggie for most, but for some such as myself IR is relatively important)
- Multimedia keys

For me I would say that overall the N95 is still my favorite device, but its a much closer thing that I would have thought before trying the N82. The xenon flash really does make such a huge difference to the photography side of the device. At the Nokiaworld party (low light conditions) the N82 was brilliant, took photos no problem, whereas the N95 was virtually unusable. I would say that if low light photography is something important to you then this alone is probably enough to swing it the was of the N82.

If you're looking at the keys and wondering how it is to type text on those Sony Ericson styled midgets I can reassure you - its fine. At least as good as on the N95 and maybe a little better in fact. Doesn't change the fact that they look ugly to me but hey, at least they work well.

Build quality is actually really quite good, although the plastic construction makes the phone feel quite plasticky and cheap.

Current firmware iteration is somewhat buggy, as we have come to expect from Nokia for a first-release firmware.

I'm thinking seriously of buying one of these. Does it have a pop port? I know it has a small USB connector of some kind, but over the years I've accumulated a few useful accessories that use this annoying proprietary port.

If not, does Nokia sell an adapter so you can use pop accessories via the USB?

No Pop Port, which is a shame for you as you have lots of Pop Port items by the sounds of it. Its a good move by Nokia in general though.

Its a shame though that they went with the Micro USB solution, rather than more ubiquitous Mini USB (as in the N95).

As for adaptors I know there are many Pop Port to 3.5m audio jack adaptors, but a quick n dirty google revealed nothing else, so you may be out of luck there(although my search was far, far from exhaustive).

I got mine yesterday, and think it's fantastic. I do have a couple of comments.

When network selection is set to dual mode, it seems to be much more inclined to select GSM than any previous phone I've owned. This means that areas in the past where I could do video calling won't let me do it unless I expressly select 3G only. Anyone else found this?

Also, what's required for a phone to support Vodafone Hotlink? When I inserted my SIM, I got an SMS from Vodafone saying that they've disabled Hotlink until I use a phone that supports it. Does Vodafone have to enable this for each model they want it to work on?

Congrats, I'm sure you'll love it!

I don't know to be honest, I always keep my N95 in GSM mode for battery conservation (3G coverage is too patchy, just drains the battery as the phone continually searches for service). I think you're probably right though regarding preferential selection of GSM - making sure the phone parts of the N95 operate well is a priority for the OS so it'll likely select the best service which will generally be GSM in NZ. If Video calling is really important to you the best option is probably to stay in GSM and then change to 3G as needed - changing one of the Active Standby application shortcuts to 'Settings' would be a quick way of switching.

Hotlink won't be supported until Vodafone approves the handset (think late first quarter 2008 I'm afraid), same thing happened with the N95 when I got it in April. No choice but to live with it for the meantime I'm afraid.

Based on a couple of days of very heavy use, really impressive. I made a good hour of calls yesterday, had an active WiFi connection because I was connected to Truphone, and I had quite a lot of juice left at the end of the day.

It does indeed have SIP. And Truphone let you connect to landlines in 40 countries for free until the end of February.

I'd be happy to stand corrected but I don't believe the assistive GPS does work here sadly.

A-GPS works here, just make sure its enabled. If you install the latest version of Nokia maps (I put a link to it somewhere round here) then there is even an indicator to show you the network traffic that A-GPS is using.

So is the voice guideance also available here too?

I had a quick play when I first got the phone, browsing for different things like accommodation and restaurants, and nothing worked, perhaps I need to install the new Nokia maps.

Sadly the NZ maps are sorely lacking, so you won't find that level of detail here. Presumably you could purchase voice-guidance, but it wouldn't be worth anything given the poor level of street detail.

For GPS Google Maps is our best option currently, but it does use network traffic ($ in other words) and has limited functionality, or you can use MGMaps and stored maps to avoid the charges (see earlier posts for details of that). If you want to pay it sounds as if Garmin Mobile XT is the best option, I'm still playing around with it so I'm not the person to ask - try PeejayW.

Hmm, Are you charged for this 'data'?
