As my partner is getting his N95 to replace his HP H6315 PocketPC... I know the first thing to do is to install the Mail for Exchange on it to sync with our Exchange server at home.

But what's next? I saw there's a topic on N95 GPS Map etc... so as an absolute start up for a new N95 user, what are the "must have" and what are recommended to install/get? And how about to get them/install.

Internet is my backyard...

Theres loads of good software - try some of the software threads here for recommendations. Simple google searches should yield lots of places to get whichever software you're after. Installation is simply a matter of downloading the Nokia PC Suite to your computer, its very straightforward (unless you have a Mac). Alternatively you can download them on the phone and installation will procede once they finish downloading.

Some quick software recommendations:

Fring (for VoIP, Skype, MSN etc), very nice program (freeware).
Y-Browser (freeware).
Google Maps/MGMaps (freewares).
ScanR (freeware).
Screenshot (freeware).
RotateMe (freeware, you'll need to sign it though or have it signed for you).
Handy Taskman (cheap, can't remember how much).
Salling Clicker (again not freeware, although there is freeware that will replicate some of its functions).
Quake (freeware).
C2Doom (only 5 euros, plenty of free WADS around)
VBagX (not free, great GBA emulator though).

EDIT: Oh yeah, be sure to sign up to N95users and symbian-freak.com - lots of freeware and nice themes available through the forums.

No nokia pc suite installed (as i had my bad share of past experience with it in my previous nokia life). We use Exchange at home, so got the Mail for Exchange 2.01 installed and that sync fine without difficulty to the server (for contacts, calendar and tasks).

I got Google Maps installed, is there anyway to get all maps downloaded and avoid the use of Access Point (data). I had a look at N95 Maps for MGMaps but I can't make the head out of tail of that thread and didn't seem to have any where to download full maps!!!

Also, what I find real confusing with N95 is, is data connection (or request for Access Point) is per software/application or global settings? I would like my partner to avoid the use of 3G connection as much as possible (as he only have 3MB data plan) and use home Wifi to get all updates etc.

Also, the latest firmware 20.x.xxx is not available for VodafoneNZ/NZ specific model is it? I've tried the update and it said the latest is 12.0.013 which is what on the phone currently.

You have to change the product code in order to get the V20 firmware (which is so much better its literally like having a new phone), that does of course void the warranty. I'd say its worth it, I debranded by handset ASAP (I'm on my second one, first one was parallel imported, it died and I had to have a Vodafone replacement).

No way to store maps with Google maps, MGMaps is your option there (you'll just have to struggle through the thread - there is a link somewhere to a page with instructions thats pretty easy to follow).

PC Suite has been fine the whole time I've used it (since April), so it may be worth giving it another try.

Access points are by application, not global settings, it asks which you want to use so as long as you're paying attention it shouldn't be a problem. Incidentally, I never run the phone in UMTS (3G) mode - too much battery drain - so thats another way to avoid 3G data charges.
