thanks for reply John. i bought my one on trademe and the guy who sold does not know.
so we cant check anything on the phone ,is it ?

Generally speaking if you put a NZ sim card in your phone, and it says simcard not recognised, that is a good indication that it is locked.

If you can send and recieve SMS and MMS messages and phone calls then it should be un-locked.

the guy i bought it from say he bought it in NZ,so want to know if i go to USA if i can use it there !!?

btw when i put my SIM card it did not say its not recognised and i could send SMS fine. if this phone bought in NZ it wont say SIM not recognised ,would it ?

Sounds like its not locked to me and vodafone nz has not locked handsets for about 5 years.

Ok, so you put your VFNZ SIM card and it works. It means the phone is not locked to any other network. And since VFNZ is not locking phones for the last few years then the phone is unlocked.

As for the "phone was bought in New Zealand" it doesn't mean anything. If it was bought from a Vodafone store the seller would say. Since nothing was said, the phone may well have been bought in New Zealand, still parallel imported.

If it's going to work in the US? I doubt you will connect to HSDPA in the US since they use a different band. It won't connect to 3G either. It is likely it will be only be usable for voice and SMS/MMS around there.
