Went through this with the household Lumia 640. Update to WP10 required. The same night as the update we received 2 scam emails purportedly from Facebook requesting a copy of Photo ID. Either coincidence or there's a way of clocking updated phones.

One of the main apps that gave the feeling of not 'missing out' being on windows phone. Family member with the 735 (beautiful phone) has no interest in moving to windows 10 either.

I tried a phone with Windows 10 (Lumia 950) and hated it, so went back to my Windows 8 phone (Lumia 930). Now I'm moving to Android, out of necessity as they stop support for 8 frown
