There are heaps of discussions on GZ already about this.  Have a look under the Symbian Smartphones forum.

still don't understand how to fully navigate around this forum...

found a few threads about n95 maps, do the process of getting maps to work on N95 be applied to the N95 8GB?

Hey Toejam,

Regarding Garmin XT on the N95 8GB - its not possible to do this legally as Garmin Mobile XT is only available on an SD card. If you have a legal copy on an SD card then I'm a little hazy on the legalities of porting it to your 8GB internal memory (I think the EULA prohibits it, and I'm not sure how this would pan out under the recent changes to copyright law here). Legal copies can be purchased from Ebay for around $80US.

Ahh ok, so you have the map loaded on the SD card, then transfer to phone from there.

hmmm, so no one has "legally" done this with a 8gb?

what other alternatives are there for upgrade maps for the 8gb,

would love to use the full capabilities of the phone before I wreck it.!

Check the N95 GPS thread - there are instructions there for how to save maps for MGMaps - free and no data charges (asides from A-GPS charges, if you have that enabled). No voice guidance unfortunately.

If you have a data plan try out Nav4All - they announced NZ maps support a while back and have voice guidance - I haven't yet had time to try it out.

OK...

So that answers one of my questions... Garmin XT is only available on a micro SD, and as such, you'd have to go without your own micro-SD if you purchased it.

Q2 - How much space does XT take up on the card?  (and can I write to it? or is it locked somehow)

Q3 - Does the Garmin XT 'talk to you'?  I've just got Nokia Maps directing me around, but might still think about Garmin XT... but does it come with voice Navigation?

ToeJam - you might wanna start with the free Nokia Maps upgrades... see this post: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=23&TopicId=21906

Thx.

Garmin is far better than even the most recent Nokiamaps update I'm afraid. It doesn't take much space on the card (which is, in other respects, just a normal 2GB microSD card). Garmin does indeed talk to you.

Its possible to port Garmin over to your own SD card, but I'm hazy on the legalities (seems like it should be fine if you have your own legal copy, but from memory there is something in the EULA about not shifting it to another card).

OK... I just rememered my Q4...

I have been looking on the site, but it's not obvious.

Is there a subscribtion fee for the Garmin XT?  If not, then it would pay for itself in 12 months.

OK... I've done it!

I just purchased Garmin Mobile XT from EBay - about $125 NZD incl shipping.

I guess I'll be back when it eventually arives, trying to find that open source NZ map for it...  Fun  time!
