Don't worry guys
sorted the problem

should have said that my pc is a Toshiba laptop and had not been able to find a update for sp2 on the australian site. Had been looking on the canadian site and nothing either.

Tried the US site and found an update for my pc and behold all fixed (but beware not to install the blue tooth monitor if you have already installed sp2, as this undoes the toshiba drivers and reverts back to not allowing control of the com ports)

thanks (still new to this stuff)
