My new Harrier is working pretty well overall, however, I do have a couple of issues I could use some help on!

I cannot install any applications, everything I have tried just pops up an error message, this is not a valid PPC application. So far I have tried Flash, Acrobat Reader 2.0 and Microsoft Reader. I contacted Telecom, but they say they do not support third party apps and to contact my supplier, they provided links to the Flash and Acrobat files, but I already had the right ones (Telecom did confirm I have the correct version of Flash for this device). I only tried the Microsoft reader as a test, if Microsoft Pocket PC apps are “not valid PPC applications” then I expect it may be a hardware issue? I have tried half a dozen others as well with the same result. Also tried downloading them directly from the phone and from another PC and transferring them plus adding them to an SD card via a card reader, just in case there had been a problem with the transfers, but no difference! Telecom also suggested installing Acrobat 1.0 first, but again it does no regard it as a PPC app.

The other issue is I changed the audio notification for incoming mail, it plays OK when I test the play button, but does not play when mail arrives. So I changed it back, but even the default no longer plays!. My phone supplier suggested, removing notifications and then reinstating, still not working. I also tried removing notifications, resetting it and reinstating, no go!

Anyone else having problems? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are these applications not installing or just showing a dialog with the message "This application was developed for a previous OS version?".

I have a Harrier and it's working ok, I even have Adobe Reader 2.0 installed on this one.

Could it be a problem during the data transfer? Perhaps you could try these things too:

  • Make sure the USB cradle is connected directly to your computer, not to a USB Hub
  • Make sure the USB Power Saving feature is disabled in Device Manager
  • Make sure the synchronisation is finished before you start installing any program

Also, just before placing the Harrier in the cradle, try a soft reset to be sure no other program is running.

I have tried downloading these directly from the phone network, transferring them via active sync from another download on a PC and transferring them to the storage card via another PC’s card reader, none will install.

They are not installing and the exact message is for example ‘Adberdr20_ppc_enu is not a valid Pocket PC application’

I transferred using the hub connected directly to the PC, however, have not tried running these with the harrier in the cradle, though I don’t see why that should make a difference?

Where is device manager? Cannot find it in settings or programs?

By a soft reset do you mean the recess button by the microphone? If so I have tried that as well.

I see the problem now. These installers are not meant to be run on your Pocket PC. The way to install programs on a Pocket PC is to place it in the cradle, and run the installer on your computer. The required files will then be copied to the correct location on your Pocket PC.

Ok, back in front of my computer... About the soft reset. If you look in the bottom of your Harrier you'll notice a hole with "Reset" written close to it. If you insert the stylus tip there it will "soft reset" your Pocket PC. This is the equivalent of a reboot on your computer. You should do this when you have to be sure that no program is running.

About the notifications: the e-mail notification will only play if the Inbox is downloading e-mails while you're in another application. If you are already on the Inbox it'll not play anything. This is handy if you have the Inbox configured to check for e-mails every "x" minutes. In this case the e-mail checking is performed in the background, and you'll hear the notification when a new e-mail arrives.

yes that is how I have it configured, to check every x minutes, it does not play a notification any more, whether e-mail is open or not, even after soft reboot without anything open!

    Apps installed and working, thanks!

Good to know the apps are now installed... I'll test the sound notification, and let you know later.

    Hi there...

The email notification sound is off by default. To enable it:

    • Tap Start -> Settings -> Sounds and Notifications
    • Tap the Notifications Tab (at the bottom)
    • Select the "Messaging: New e-mail message" from the event drop down list
    • Tick the Play Sound button & Select the sound you want (if desired)
    • Tick the "Display message on the screen" and other options if required (You might like to tick the vibrate box too)
    • Tap the OK button (top right corner).

It should now play a sound if you are in another application when a new email arrives.

    Hope this helps!

Yes well, that is the problem really, I have done all the steps above and changed the e-mail notification audio file and that is where it has all gone wrong.

Now, no e-mail notification, vibrate also does not work, no message on screen, just no notification at all possible now, even if everything is set to default audio etc.

Note enable sounds for programs is also ticked.

Well all solved really, even though the manual says your can install applications by downloading them to the phone, it doesn’t seem to work, but installing from a PC when in the cradle works fine.

Mail notification is seems only works when messaging is OFF. That means not minimized, so obviously when you get an e-mail, view it and “close” messaging, no more notifications! Bit of a design flaw if you ask me! Which they obviously didn’t. Still as usual there are work arounds, a small app that makes the X work as a close instead of minimize should work.

    Thanks for the help.

You can actually install some applications directly on your Pocket PC. If the application is a .cab install file you have to copy it to your Pocket PC, find the file using File Explorer and execute it. This will install the program.

Sometimes (although very unusual), develoers distribute the .exe direclty. This is not usual due to virus risks, etc...

Also - on that note, it is somewhat more common for developers to distribute a Pocket PC Exe that is actually a proper over the air installer.

I use this method for OTA software. SPB AirSetup is good for single cab files...

Pocket Internet Explorer does not support 100% Javascript, does not support any Java, and may have problems with sites that expect Internet Explorer 6.0 as the browser agent. You might want to check other browser options, like Netfront (available in our Geekzone software Store.

That wouldn't be ANZ would it. Because I have that problem too, infact I have all sorts of problems with the ANZ site from time to time, due to it's pop-up methods of access. They haven't changed their website system for 5 years! I don't have any problems accessing my BNZ accounts from the harrier. Time to change bank!
