So the Nokia 6630 (http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,,58708,00.html) is out overseas.

Does anyone know when, if at all, its going to get released in NZ? Its up on the Aus/NZ Nokia site (http://nokia.co.nz/nokia/0,,59752,00.html), supposedly available 4th Q of 2004.. Which it isn't :)

I know that just because it is released overseas doesn't mean it will be released here.

All indications seem to be that it will be released here, however. I was wondering if anyone knew when.

WCDMA (or 3GSM or UMTS) is the technology Vodafone selected for their 3G services. There are a few cell sites with WCDMA enabled, but only used for testing purposes. Vodafone held a demo a couple of months ago, and we were treated to the wonders of this technology.

Caveats: as implemented by Vodafone, WCDMA will have a max speed of 384Kbps, which is slower than the CDMA EV-DO available from Telecom NZ (average of 500Kbps with 1Mbps peaks). During the demo we tried to use a 3G equipped laptop for data connection, but it didn't work. It seems that Nokia eas playing with the configuration at that time. Video calls worked fine though.

Video calls were tested with a Sony Ericsson Z1010 and with a Nokia 6630.

The Nokia 6630 is available at an Auckland store called E Town Digital if you were interested in getting one before Vodafone might stock em.

Apart from the fact that the bigger screen is easier to scratch the 6630 is a top phone.

Yeah i'm pretty keen to get one - nice picture resolution from this phone (1.3mega pixel).

What do you think?? mobile phones will be 2 - 3 mega pixel capable by next year?...i think so.
It's a pitty pxt is restricted to 100kb per message - maybe this will change with new phones supporting bigger and better media.

The camera may well be 1meg but they tend to come out a little dark whan used in side. Would of thought that Nokia would of added a flash......

If its the 'muvee' function you're talking about, I haven't used it on the 6630, but I have used it on the 7610.

Its a novelty, and works quite well. But the additions to the video and audio really suffer from being shown on such a small screen. You need a really good video to start with, otherwise it all just turns into a blur.
