Come on, where is the research and where is the balance in this story here?

"a capable device that just falls short of knocking Apple's creation off the top perch."

OK, what do you backup that statement with?  Nowhere to be seen in the entire article.

"Photo quality is as I would expect for a phone camera, as is video playback."

In other words, is the Nokia 5800 3mp camera better than the iPhone's 2mp without auto-focus camera?  Why not state it as it is?  Must be hard for him/her to admit iPhone isn't perfect at everything.

"The 5800 comes with a GPS receiver and Nokia's map service (free to use but you'll be charged for data usage), "

Pardon?  Charged for data usage?  You don't need to download data to use the maps with GPS.  Research the facts.  Google isn't always a good friend.

Oh wait, if the article keeps referring back to the iPhone, why not mention the iPhone has no integrated GPS and no free maps?  Hmmm...

"The XpressMusic 5800 a great phone but Apple's offering pips it at the post - just."

Tell us about the "offerings".  Don't just state what you think, readers need the facts.

I am not moaning because I am a Nokia fan.  I am moaning because I cannot stand reviewers writing as if they understand or know the facts.  Write with balance and compare apples with apples.  Statements such as"Apple's offering pips it at the post" needs to be backed-up.  Otherwise it's simply an article to advertise how Apple's products are better.

Hrmm... I think you're reading a little too much in to what is a very simplistic and brief review. It is what it is - a review of a phone that is in direct competition with other touchscreen mobile phones, the most prominent of which happens to be the iPhone (hence the references to it).

It came out OK I thought? It's a phone of similarity to the iPhone that overall isn't quite as good (in this reviewers eyes). There's nothing wrong with them stating that! A review is always going to be influenced by the opinion of the reviewer themselves. That's what a review is - one persons opinion of a product.

I'm sure if he was afforded the luxury of more column inches then the review may well have gone in depth to the point you would have been satisfied...

This statement by you is wrong. The iPhone DOES have integrated GPS and does have a free mapping application

OK I will give you that one - iPhone has GPS, my bad.

It shouldn't be called a review if the writer does not have the real estate.  All I am saying is back up the comments with some facts.  There are way too many Apple fan boys out there parading their Apple products and shooting down everything else.  Take a look at the NZ Herald website under the technology section.  Nothing is good enough if it isn't Apple.

Write with balance.  Take a look at other review sites out there (Notebookreview.com; mobile-review.com) and see how subjective they are.

What I cannot stand is the fact that the Stuff article writer wrote a review on the phone without properly using the device for a good length of time.

Agreed.

The purpose of a review is to talk about a product's capabilities. Not continually compare a product with another product.

After playing with the 5800 I think I'm sum it up by saying the only similarity between both devices is the fact they have touchscreens. That's about where it ends. The media seem to have decided it's supposed to be an "iPhone beater" even though it's nothing close.

I think the real issue here is that most newspapers have a handful of good journalists and the remaining 90% are muppets.

The person that wrote this review has probably never had much of an interest in technology and has been told to start at the bottom and work his/her way up - the bottom being a very quick review of a mobile phone. Handed a phone, told they had a week to do up a review of it in between their other stories for the week that included a variety from the gardening, motoring, fashion sections as well as creating this weeks horoscopes and weather forecasts.

There are so many different errors in the reporting of many stories in most papers throughout NZ that you've really got to take them with a grain of salt. For the average Joe the article probably said enough. For you and I, The Press or Stuff would be the last place we'd go to for technology advice.

Let's not get started on the Herald!

I just read the article... and instead read "the 5800 comes with a 3.2 megapixel camera (compared to the iPhone's 2MP one) "

Wonder if they found this forum and fixed their mistake... as I'm guessing the first one was a direct quote originally?

Heh, I've long since stopped getting annoyed at the bliss engendered by the media in the area of technology (read: ignorance). That includes most places that try to make out they are technology savvy, let alone the Herald, who, lets face it, are a pretty rubbish source of news...

I don't see why they even bother since their reviews or product descriptions are no where close to the quality of other review sites on the web.

Lol - that handful certainly doesn't equate to 10%, you're being overly generous.  However, I totally agree with your comments about taking their statements with a grain of salt.

Actually, I don't think I've ever used a site like Stuff (or especially The Herald) as a source for technology related information...  Then again, joe public doesn't usually know any better, which is what allows for not just shonky reviews but serious misgivings across the entire journalism field.
