problem description : SD memory card is not recognised by system software and also not by third party programs. Card is correct and works fine in other Ipaq 3970. CF card in expansion pack sleeve works fine. So, problem seems to be with SD memory card interface only. I never used the SD interface before, since I only recently bought an SD memory card of 512Mb.
Operating system: OS 4.20.1081.3; PPC 2003.

After a soft reset and after a while (when using the 3970 without CF sleeve) doing some normal operations on it (PIM, third party programs), it comes with the message "Do you want to format this storage card ". When answering yes, it comes with the message : "This card could not be formatted. Try reinserting the card or using a different one"

System Information supplied by SKtools on SD card interface:
When card is NOT inserted:
Bus driver version 1.1
Slot 0
Host index: 0, slot index 0

When card is inserted:
Bus driver version 1.1
Slot 0
Host index: 0, slot index 0
Inserted card: Driver not loaded
Cardtype: Unknown
Interface mode: 1 bit(s), Clock rate : 97656

Not entirely impossible - I know someone with an h3970 and the same problem. However, try using another memory card, or even formatting this card with a card reader and inserting it again.

Formatting SD card on other device gives no solution. Other brand card gives no solution.
When I asked HP support they suggested:
Soft reset => in case no solution: hard reset => in case no solution: send in for repair.
Since I have quite a lot of programs loaded, each with code-keys, I am a bit reluctant in hard resetting the device.
Is it possible that a DLL or driver has been removed (keeping in mind that the CF card in the sleeve works fine)? and if yes, would a hard reset bring it back? or can I copy it and load it myself? Does somebody know which DLL/driver is the bad-guy?

all help is welcome

In this case it does sound like it is a hardware problem, not unheard of. You will have to send it for repair.

Theo, simple and short, contact HP because you need a new motherboard. I had exactly the same problem wich occurred after ejecting my SD from my 3970. After contactinh HP and trying several things, HP came and took my Ipaq in for repairs and replaced the motherboard. Hope this is usefull.
