Hey guys, I was thinking today that should my Bold ever crap out and I need to send it away to get sorted I'd be lost. 90% of my emailing is done through my BB account and if I have no blackberry then I have no email.
I'm considering buying another cheaper BB as a spare and was wondering if (bear with me, this may seem like a stupid question) you can just "swap" BB's over? Is it just a matter of changing the sim or is there something more involved? I'm on vodafone and have a 200mb BIS plan.
Also any suggestions on which Blackberry would make a good back up? I quite like the storm however its not really priced in a spare phone kind of way, unless of course I go second hand off trademe.

cheers
Daniel

yeah you should be OK if you are not using blackberry messenger, if you are BBM mad like me I think it's best for you to upgrade to 5.0 or they call it now 2.0 or 2.5 which is what they are calling it. The new BBM no longer relies on PIN but email address/es you stored in there, just a back up and if you want cheap, I'd not go any lower than the 8110, plenty of unlocked cheapos from trademe, and it has GPS (only if you pay for compass), but if you're not worried about GPS then the 8100 is OK too. I'm hanging out for the onyx to surface to upgrade my pearl ...

Hi Daniel,

BlackBerry Desktop software is your friend for this. It has a Switch Device option that will backup the information on the old and transfer to the new device, all in a few easy clicks. You then run email setup wizard on the new device to transfer your BIS service over.
You can download BB Desktop software from Vodafone or BlackBerry sites.

Regarding which a spare cheap device stay with devices that has the same device software as the Bold, i.e. 4.6 or higher. This way you'll get most of the functions on the Bold. I recommend the 8900, and the cheaper (really cheap for a BB) 8520 which should be out from Voda.

Cheers

and of course depends on budget. As if all he does is email, then he should not really worry about what OS it has. 300 for a second hand pearl 8110 V 650 for a brand new 8520? i'd go for the first one :)

Thanks guys, I would probably go with the pearl, seems like a good phone. There really isn't any point in paying a large amount of money for a "just in case" phone that I may never need, providing my bold behaves itself.
