I have just installed Garmin XT on my phone (with assistance from reading geekzone - thanks) and it works brilliantly. We are going to the US for a driving holiday shortly. Can anyone tell me where I can download US maps for the XT?

you probably have to pay for them. You buy them on an SD card. They aren't cheap. The agent is apparently SOUTH PACIFIC AVIONICS LTD.

I'd personally ditch XT and get Nokia Maps 3.3 - it's free, it has maps for the entire globe and it's got full turn-by turn assistance as well as Lonely Planet guides on every destination you will visit...

I installed the new Nokia ‘free GPS’ service on my phone (Nokia 5800 XM) over the weekend. Went for a drive and it was hopeless – totally inaccurate as to where I was and therefore no good on navigation. Could not be used.

So I installed Garmin XT and it worked very well. After your comment above, I realised I may have had an outdated Nokia map so downloaded a latest one. Went for a quick drive just now and it’s fantastic – pin-point accurate and great navigation with plenty of POI’s etc.

From quick test and I’m not an experienced user, it seems to me that the Garmin and Nokia systems are very similar in ordinary use. The Nokia system definitely has better map graphics and they work great on the phone screen. What also puts Nokia ahead, as you say, is the accompanying Lonely Planet and Michelin Guide info. The LP stuff is very good.
