There is 7 people that live in my place and there is only one computer. However I have an old Palm m515 handheld. The last few days I have been trying to configure internet onto the handheld computer using the same ISP as the desktop's. My handheld doesnt have bluetooth so I'm going to use the usb hotsync cradle to connect. I'm thinking on later upgrading to a higher tech handheld that has bluetooth and also buy a bluetooth receiver for the desktop.

Before I buy that I want to know if this is possible, and if you can explorer all the web pages that you can with internet explorer or netscape. I'd also like to know if the bluetooth laser can go through walls or not.

My problem is whenever I tap on connect I get a message that says Error: PPP timeout (0x1231). I looked this up and I found that this is a common problem for people connecting using bluetooth. And that it was resolved by going to prefs/network/details/script and doing something to the script. But I want to connect using the hotsync cradle. What do I put into the script to make this work, is there anything else I should do?

Welcome to Geekzone... Connecting your Palm to the Internet via the cradle requires a third party software, such as these ppp over USB programs for Palm.

As for the Bluetooth it will work with a range of up to 10 meters, but in my experience the Palm will probably not go further than 5 meters before dropping the connection. You will need to change some configurations on your PC to allow this connection, so be prepared to follow instructions exactly.

As for walls, Bluetooth is a Personal Area Network technology, and for small spaces only. It will not go through walls. It uses radio transmissions, not laser.

Thanks, I downloaded a ppp over usb program and I couldn't beleive how simple it was to connect. I used Avantgo for the internet browser.

I probibaly wont use this for internet because it took forever to load the web pages. The progress bar at the top of the screen showed that it was downloading the pages in only about 15secs. But after that the status changed to loading and stayed at loading for well over a min. This is because of my slow proccessor right?

If I bought a newer handheld with a faster proccessor and bluetooth I should be abill to browse the web with no problem right?

Another problem was that the pages were so huge. I had to do a lot of scrolling. If I used something like the blazer browsers that come with the newer handhelds, would there be a zoom function, for zooming in and out? The blazer browser would probibly load the pages faster right? It is called blazer.

A newer handheld will probably improve the experience for sure, but nothing much you can do if the pages are not formatted for PDAs - but the newer webpro software has options to zoom and to reformat the page - quite good actually.

As for the Bluetooth, I don't think it will be much faster - there's a speed limit in the PPP connection over Bluetooth, which is the serial driver used (115kbps), which is probably the same as the USB connection...

If considering a new handheld device for browsing, go for the highest resolution, this will give better usability. WebPro (as mentioned) which comes with new Palm models, improves the browsing experience, but page loading is still slower than what you will get on the PC. Using a 100m BlueTooth access point (less than $60), will give you about 40m in a home environment.
