I downloaded the latest version of OVi maps (3.04) onto my 5800XM. Afterwards every time I opened the Ovi maps application the phone would crash.

Some googling found that others had had the same issue. One poster said how they had fixed the problem by disabling the Wifi positioning option (one of the upgrades in 3.04). My phone would crash before I had time to make any changes to the Ovi setup.

I did have a stroke of luck. I opened the "Application mgr" in the Settings menu and found there was an application there for WiFi positioning, I uninstalled this and Ovi maps worked without causing the phone to crash.

Has anyone had a similar problem? How did you fix it?

Just for the record, I haven't had this issue and have just updated after getting a 5800XM with very old firmware/software.

I just have problems getting a lock with iGPS... works fine when I'm home but is more than likely to not get a lock while I'm out and about.

Did ya upgrade to os 50.0.005?

I've decided that I will rarely use the WiFi option so for now aren't bothering to get it to work. Hopefully other people with my problem can at least get Ovi maps working with my solution.

The problem with getting a lock on often happens when the GPS is switched on in a different location to the previous time it was used. The GPS needs to sort out where it is. My understanding is the GPS uses an almanac to tell it where the satellites are or what satellites it should be looking for, this almanac is updated from the satellites. When the GPS is moved and then turned on the satellites are no longer where it expects to see them or it is seeing different satellites from that ones it expects to see. It needs to reaquire data to sort this out. Hence the delay in giving a lock on.

Once you have had a lock on at a location even if you turn the GPS off and or move it to other locations without using it it will lock on quite quickly when switched back on at the orginal location. This may be why you get quick lock ons at home.

This is where assisted GPS comes into its own as the GPS gets the reaquistion data via a server.

I have these settings

Positioning server use - Alway ask

Access point - Telecom Internet

Server address - supl.nokia.com

There was an issue causing crashes if you used the Google server in one of the recent versions. Lots of people changed to supl.google.com which gave far quicker GPS locks.

I was just curious if you had changed it.

On the Nokia.com forum they announced that there was a bug in Joiku Spot Premium that caused the Maps application to crash when wifi positioning was turned on. Joiku Spot is supposed to have the fix out, so if you have it and you update the Joiku app, then you should be able to turn wifi positioning back on. The positioning settings are for the whole phone, not just maps, so all the location apps use them.

Thanks for the info. That was exactly the problem.

I installed the latest version of Joikuspot and reinstalled Ovi Maps and it all woked perfectly.

I must say I'm impressed with the WiFi positioning, it works really well. I didn't think it would be worth bothering with, I've changed my mind on that. Ovi are really putting some development into the maps app. They have some great ideas in the pipeline. It is impressive for a free application. Take a look here at what is being planned etc.
