I am thinking of getting a blackberry just because i like the style of them and i'm wondering why does telecom say that you need a data plan for a blackberry if the only thing i'm going to be using is facebook sometimes
and most of the time ill probably just use it off of Wifi.... or when i'm out and about through the telecom network..

can't i just get a prepaid data thing to check my facebook as that is the only thing i am going to be doing as i am not a business man.

thank you!

All mobile data a Blackberry uses goes through their servers. his has a cost and you will need mobile data for this to work. You can use WiFi as JohnR says. But not as convenient as real mobile data.

And if you get a smartphone, you will use mobile data. No reason to have a "connected phone" that can't connect...

But as i explained
i just want to use it for txting and maybe internet a few times within a wifi area/ while at hime
etc... so it's pretty much going to be used as a normal phone not a business phone

someone has offered to give me their old one thats why i am asking you people who know alot about phones.

To be able to use this part you need to have a Blackberry Data plan, as frietasm said Blackberrys use the RIM servers, its super secure with encryptions and a bunch of other fancy features, and RIM charge you for the privilege .Also keep in mind if the one your friend is willing to sell off to you is on CDMA then it cant be connected as prepay

You can't use prepaid data on a Blackberry. You can use on other devices, but not on this.

That's all.

Its not the same as normal mobile data

Did you Google search how Blackberry data works as I suggested above?

All Blackberry data has to go via blackberry infrastructure which is over the other side of the world which goes over very costly links

you can use the prepaid data on almost any other device, maybe look at getting a nice shiny android

as you said you arnt a business man, so Garmin-Asus A10, its the same price as the Bold9000 through teleccom and you can connect it through prepaid data

Well my mate is on Vodafone and he has a blackberry and refuses to pay for the BlackBerry Service thing. He uses BBLite through Vodafone and it works just fine, he just doesnt get encryption. OP; why not just put your sim in your mates phone and try use the internet. Just dont register for BBService and see what happens. No harm in trying. I mean like, if it works on Vodafone then it surely must work on Telecom.

let me summarize this for you.

if you buy a blackberry phone, get blackberry service. blackberry phone without blackberry service is like buying a 7-bedroom house on a 10 acres land for your 90-yrs old parents to live by themselves.

without blackberry service, be prepared to have issues/troubles when you try to access data via the mobile network or using the built-in browser/email app etc. this is an old article but good to read if u wanted to learn more about blackberry. http://bit.ly/DhEhy

well, its not that serious mate.

I'm using a 9700 on a iphone plan, its runing good.

I can't use the original web browser for http pages, but I can install other browsers to do it.

I can't use Blackberry Messenger, but I can use many other messengers which is more popular than the Blackberry one. recommend whatsapp, perfect software only cost you US$2.00 a year!!!

I can't use the Blackberry push email, but I do get email pushed by a third party service provider. or if you think its too hard to configure, just install a Gmail.

I can't benefit from compressed data through BIS, but I have 3GB from the special promotion by the provider on the data, so who care if its compressed? I can hardly use our 500Mb, unless I tether.

So, what else??

Seriously, just don't get a blackberry. There level of proprietriness down to the fact that every bit of data needs to go via RIMs servers in canada make it so inferior to Android or Iphone
