I see on the Nokia NZ website that the E7 is "coming shortly".

While the N8 has an awesome camera, for me the E7 has the advantage with the bigger 4" screen over the 3.5' of the N8.  The slide out Qwerty keyboard could be very useful too tho I reserve judgement on that.  I want to move away from using both my Palm TX (which is great) and my 5800(which is also great). Currently the screen on the 5800 is a shade too small for some things I currently use the Palm for.

One thing I am interested in finding out is, Will the E7 have a Qwerty keyboard on the screen in landscape mode when the physical key board is not in use?  N97 owners might be able to help here because I am presuming that the same logic might be used in this regard on the N97 and the E7.

Also what is the slideout keyboard like on the N97?  Is it worth it? Is it likely to break easily?  Is it easy to use? Bearing mind of course that keyboard on the E7 is of different diminsions and ease of use may well be different because of this.

I'd be interested in other comments users might have.

On the N97 the touchscreen pops up alphanumeric buttons (not qwerty) if you try to edit something without the keyboard opened, but some apps don't seem to work and txt uses the standard keypad layout onscreen. Its not too bad because keyboard design is convenient, but really have to use keyboard for anymore than updating a few characters like contact names etc.

Time to find a new industry!

Has anyone got hold a an E7 yet?

If so what are your thoughts on it so far?

I'm particularly insterested in comments about the fixed focus camera and using the USB port for charging.

I think the E7, C7 and C6-01 all use the same 8Mp fixed focus camera, so if you can get your hands on any of those, or at least a decent review it might give you an idea.

My feeling is that if it's fixed focus, then to get the required depth of field, it's probably got a pretty small camera sensor and that means some performance compromises compared with N8 and might not even match older phones like the N86 or N95.

There is a camera test chart here to compare models - E7 vs N8 vs C7 - use the scaling options to get a better comparison between N8 and E7 photo quality for the same sized image.

http://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=1&idPhone1=3545&idPhone2=3252&idPhone3=3394

But of course taking pictures of test charts only tells us so much. The focus compromise is probably fine for portrait or group shot - but perhaps we shouldn't expect to repeat the close up shot like seen here with the N95.

In regards to the onscreen keyboard, yes you do get on screen QWERTY when the slide is closed.
The keyboard itself I find a big improvement on the N97.
The camera is more than capable against everything else on the market (bar the N8)

The extra screen real estate is fantastic and out in the sun is by far the best screen I've used (bar the old B&W screens ;) )

Hi Brent,

I've recently had a chance to see an E7 in the flesh and have seen the on screen QWERTY keyboard in landscape mode, it looks good and I didn't miss the QWERTY keyboard in portrait mode, though I guess this might be a worthwhile option.

I'm very impressed with the screen both the size and the viewability in sunlight.  Thanks for the answer on the camera.  I guess some of the reviews made it sound worse that it is, while porobably a step down in some ways from some other cameras in that there will be no macro option it is still a capable camera.

I think I could live with the camera quite happily, for me there is a question mark about the USB charging.  I regularly use my phone in the car and need to plug in a charger while driving.  As I use the GPS regularly the phone needs to be up on top of the dashboard by the windscreen.  In my car this requires a longer cord than normal to reach the cars power plug.  What options are there for charging the E7 in a situation like this?

One phone I owned very briefly also used the USB port for charging, however you could only use the USB charger provided with the phone or a USB port on your computer.  I had a  power adapter for use in my car with a USB outlet but this wouldn't charge the phone.  Are there any restrictions like this on the E7?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

For charging, you want the Nokia Charger Adapter CA-146C. It converts from your existing large/small pin Nokia charger to MicroUSB. Also it should work on any USB charger, though I've found mixed results in terms of charging speed with third-party chargers -- original ones seem to charge much faster.

Hi Nic,

Thanks for the reply.  That connector looks to be just the answer.  Will it be available in New Zealand? The link appeared to go to an overseas Nokia site.

Any idea on when the E7 might become available officially in New Zealand and which networks it will be on?

Thanks again

I would check your local Vodafone store, they may be to order it in. Otherwise if you're in Auckland you may be able to pick it up from our Care Centre on Khyber Pass Road.

Symbian has a fair few updates in the works, including a UI redesign which will bring the interface up to what customers are telling us they expect in an everyday smartphone. Look out for an announcement soon regarding the first of these major software releases, which will all be available for existing devices (ie N8, C7 and E7).

Quite a few might also say thankfully it still runs Symbian.  Not everyone is binded by flashy UI's.  Symbian does it's job very well
