I am guessing the default location to store txt/mms/emails on my SP5 is the device itself? Is there any way I can specify a different location, e.g. my miniSD card?

That's correct. You can't change that though.

Yet another hope dashed....

I wonder if there's a technological reason behind that inflexibility? I would like to store emails for one of my accounts on my phone but it can potentially require lots of space. Wouldn't it be great to utilise that nearly-empty 1GB miniSD card?
