Hiya fellow geeks,

Since applying the AKU2.2 update to my Apache, I've had all sorts of connectivity issues.  Mostly it seems that things hang during the connect or disconnect phase, and it takes a battery removal to clear things up.

E.g I connect via EVDO to synch my mail with work, and it all works fine.  I then disconnect using the new connection manager, which seems to work as expected.  If I try and reconnect the EVDO at a later time, it just times out.  Most of the time, connection manager can't be stopped via the memory settings as it is "not responding".  So it's pull the battery out, wait for 10 seconds, put it back in, start 'er up, and repeat the above :-)

I have similar issues with WiFi at home, and it also seems that once I have connected to one form of wireless I can't start another without the power reset.

Thankfully, the ordinary old phone features are working fine through all of this!  I did managed to scotch 160+ contacts re-installing our Lotus Notes synch software after the firmware update, but that's another story ;-)  (Hmmm... as I write that down, I wonder if I should re-apply the firmware and re-test things before I add the mSuite software?)

If anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it.  Is the AKU2.2 update officially supported by Telecom yet?  Do you think it's worth asking them to take a look or re-flash my phone back to standard?

Cheers,
Andy.

Could it be conflicting with any other software? Have you tried without any software installed?

I had the AKU2 beta for a while, and then installed the RC, just before the release through our forums, and I have it working ok - actually I haven't seem one of the main issues I had with the original ROM and the first beta (the freeze during ON with a miniSD inserted).

I'm on call after hours this week, so I think I'll wait untuil next week to remove any additional programs.

For the record, I have the following additional software installed:

Microsoft .NET CF 2.0
Citrix ICA client
Cambridge vxUtil (network tools)
Synapse EasyRoam
.NET VNC Viewer  (just the exe, no installer)
CommonTime mNotes (Lotus notes synch)

I am also set up to get email from my personal POP account, Gmail, and Hotmail.  These all work fine as long as I can establish a connection!

If it is some sort of software conflict, what testing order do you think would be best?  My thinking would be:

- Remove all installed software and test inbuilt functions (MSN, IE etc).
- Hard reset and test
- Re-apply AKU 2.2 and test

If the device behaves as expected in any of these states, then start adding software packages one by one and see if/when the problems re-occur.  Sound about right?

Sounds like a good plan.

An update on what I've been up to! Smile

1.  Removing the additional software didn't help.

2.  After a hard reset, the phone started acting as suspected.  Connect, disconnect, reconnect, alarms... everything going as it should.

3.  I have also re-installed most of my software - Citrix ICA, .Net CF, vxUtil, Adobe Reader, VNC Viewer, and the phone is still OK.

Next up, I have to get our CommonTime mSuite synch software installed again.  That should be some time this week, and I'll post again to let you know if that breaks anything!

I work in Mount Maunganui, and live in Papamoa.  I usually have EV reception at 3 or 4 bars so all should be OK on that front (unless I'm in the local supermarket when even 1X doesn't work - go figure!).

Note that the original problem also manifested itself just turning Wi-Fi on-off-on etc at my house, where reception is generally pretty good too (unless I'm in the garden shed!  Maybe there's a pattern here Wink)

Could it be a faulty unit?

Just asking because I was running the previous beta for this update, and the official release, and haven't noticed anything like this.

has the unit ever been in for a warranty?

one unit i have has trouble connecting to ev. it wont get on the internet, and apparently this is a known fault, - read:  happens all the time, to units which have been sent back for servicing, due to something with the programmer.

my issue is; why did that happen to me when it was sent back with a bent battery pin.

Faulty unit?  Could be I guess - but like a good support customer I'm trying to narrow it down before beating up on the vendor Wink

Not long after I got the unit, it did take part in an impromtu short-distance impact test whilst I was jumping a puddle in a car park.  It suffered a couple of scratches on the case, and for a week or two the screen would go white during operation.  Using the power button to turn the screen off then on cleared this up, and the problem eventually went away.

So yeah... I guess there may have been another fault.  However, the radio features functioned without issue for a month or two after the drop and only started playing up when I did the AKU 2.2 update.

I am going to load the mSuite software again tomorrow and will keep testing the connectitivty.  If it starts playing up again, I may take one last stab at getting the software vendor to confirm/deny any compatibility issues before going back to Orb/Telecom on the hardware side.

Thanks for the input,
Andy.

Sorry to keep dredging this up, but I guess I should keep the thread updated in case anyone else gets this problem!

Yesterday I had the CommonTime mSuite software installed again and waddayaknow - my connections are playing up again!  So it looks like I have a culprit.

I'm going to get a support call opened with CommonTime and ask if they have had any other reports of this, or if they are planning any updates for MSFP.  I'll update again once I hear back.

Thanks for listening! Smile
