From a press release today:

In addition, HP reported that it plans to announce that it will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.

OMG what? Seriously, there is absolutely no reason to ever consider the TouchPad now - not that I was ever considering it over Android.

HP TouchPad and Microsoft Kin... Those were probably the "fastest out of the market" products around.

They didnt even really get it into the market for a choice to be made, more likely HP new it was a gamble to introduce a left field OS in a market with two good incumbents, and now the stock is tumbling have pulled the plug on most of their personal computing activities.

I saw the demo of the HP tablet last Friday at the Ingram Micro show in Wellington - before then I had read reviews which basically said just another tablet, but must admit that it had some nice features too.
Still very surprised how quick its death has come - well Web OS anyway. Wonder if there will be some going at bargin prices!

Just read the TechDay release - imagine how much R&D $$ went into that device...ouch.

Palm were a great company for years, in the 90s I had a series of Palm devices. Nothing I can find these days can match them for simplicity and speed of use. Unfortunately their hardware quality was shockingly bad, out of the four units I paid for I had about fifteen when you count replacements. The Tungsten N (with a keyboard) was especially bad, I had six of those.

Then they split the company, sold bits, bought bits, and spent a long time and a fortune writing a new OS. If they were two years earlier to market maybe they'd have had more luck, but they were just too little, too late. HP was pretty stupid for buying them.

WebOS has honestly just been mismanaged, it has some spectacular ideas but every time a product releases they seem to botch it up.  It's just unfortunate because although I probably would never buy a WebOS device, I really really want one.  I don't actually think the smaller eco system makes a huge difference as I'm sure people only ever use 10-15 apps in their day to day lives.  But now perhaps I'll be able to pick up a TouchPad and a Veer for not a lot of money.

Really interested to see what happens to webOS. Was seriously considering a TouchPad.

HP should consider releasing webOS as open-source and let the homebrew community take over it. The OS itself has a lot of potential.

Selling them for 99$ USD as of right now to clear the stock.

Wonder if we'll get similar discounts?
