Is this right? I have been anticipating this release for a long time. One of (the many) reasons I was interested in a PS3 was backward compatibility. Why should I pay full price for a system that won't support my old games? This new PS3 system is different from what Sony has been advertising. What if I had already placed a deposit for my PS3, should I expect a discount?

In my opinion this is a PR disaster for the PS3 and I am seriously coinsidering not buying one now.

What do others think?

I sympathise your feeling. It is really a PR disaster for Sony, and seeing that Sony is shooting themselves over and over and over again isn't going to do them much good anymore. Their European/PAL-region launch is certainly going to draw more complaints or dissatisfaction quite a bit more.

Perhaps it isn't going to be a good successful year for Sony as to what they hope PS3 to be (as game console). There are numerous blogs posting that perhaps Sony should refocus their PS3 as something else rather than next generation game console, that at least will bring them better fortune perhaps.

If PS3 is marketed as Blu-ray player, with multimedia capability and PS/PS2/PS3 gaming feature, then it'd potentially be selling better. As then it would be reclassified as home theatre player, rather than game console primarily. Not to forget, it'll be the cheapest Blu-ray player with much more capability than its next closest competitor (Samsung's Blu-ray player). THAT IS IF Sony is smart enough to remarket PS3 as something else other than next generation console.

We have never thought of getting PS3 from the very first day it was first announced... We have been looking at XBox360 to extend our XP MCE, but instead, we got ourselves Wii. We might get XBox360 to fill in those missing XBLA games...

Personally I feel backwards compatability is just a bonus, though I'm not sure what was promised by Sony. If I buy a console it's for the new games that it offers - I'm not worried about my existing library since I keep the older consoles anyway. The PS3 in general seems to have been a bit of a PR disaster for Sony, hopefully they'll have some standout titles to calm the seething masses.

because the backwards compatability is software emulation, they can release upgrades to support titles that do not work. Microsoft faced the exact same problem with the 360. 3% of the game titles had problems and this has been fixed as of the Janurary 27 firmware update.

I think the PS3 is going to blow the doors off the 360 and Wii but I'm not falling for the market skimming.

Funny thing with the ps3 maybe going to be a home theatre the Wii will have a massive boost with a product froming from the codecodec/coreforge team going to be releasing a pay-for app for the wii which will be able to make it a home theatre (they are also doing the venic project or what ever skypes new video on deman thingy is called now)

you can buy NTSC-J ps3 at 59,800 yen from yahoo japan shopping.

it still somewhat $450 cheaper than in NZ price (google "59800 jpy in nzd?")
(even cheaper if you buy it from local shops usually comes with 2~5% discount coupon)

if we gather orders we could buy it from japan and send it to us without huge shipping cost.

anyway all the games are now region free and all the hdt are NTSC playback so why not?

furthermore, last time i checked, it was free-voltage power supply (plz correct me if i'm wrong)

i think its good time to buy it from japan because jpy is now re bouncing from lower exchange rate.

anyone with me?

Hong Kong and Singapore are also options for cheaper PS3's, and if like me you travel to the UK or US once or twice every couple of years they're both stop over options, so you get them in the duty free shops ;)

You could even just buy it in the US and save money, but I'd personally wait till they bring out the new 80G model with the new blue tooth aerial, or they shrink the chip.

why wait for the 80G model when you can use any 2.5" SATA disk?
Instructions for changing the HDD are even in the manual.

Mate of mine bought a PS3.. must say I am very impressed by the graphics and gameplay is alot more fun with the accelerometer in the controller!
