I had a read through the Sony press release regarding the new PS3 and noticed this:

"Removal of Install Other OS feature
The new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content, and users will not be able to install other Operating Systems to the new PS3 system."

Looks like Linux is gone until someone can crack it which may not be likely given there are still no effective mod chips for the PS3.

I just read that everything on the new PS3 was going to be exactly the same as what it is now...so youd think that would include what youve mentioned... oh well.

What cost savings could there be from removing that option? Seems weird.

Slightly misleading topic here. It's only the new PS3 slim that won't support alternative Operating Systems. Older 'phat' models continue to support this option and the feature doesn't suddenly disappear.

No big loss really, Linux is so hobbled on the PS3 in the lack of hardware access ... framebuffer only for graphics and going through the hypervisior for disk slows the hard disk to 20mb/s or so :-(

And there's no real point buying Ps3s for Cell programming cause if you are serious about that then you get the Cell PCIe boards.
