Decided to try Assassians Creed Odessey. I am super much enjoying it, but then I have loved the others as well. I didn't play Origins much despite it being my favourite setting. I'll probably go back to it.

My favourite, easily was black flag.

AC2 is my GOAT, such a great game. The others went off the boil a bit for my liking.

I was playing battlefield 5 until the batteries went flat and the backup batteries are flat too. I play sekiro: shadows die twice and far cry 4 as well.

Although I have always loved Naughty Dog games (played through and finished every game in the Uncharted series), for some reason I'd never been able to really get into The Last of Us. It's not that I didn't enjoy it but I ended up always stalling on finishing it. Finally got back into the game entirely afresh and am now around probably 50% of the way through the remaster and it's just spellbinding. It just gets away from the most annoying features of modern games IMO. It's so refreshing to have collectibles that can be very coincidentally found most of the time with a bit of attention, without immersion breaking nonsense of having to traipse gazillion miles away just to chase one because some designer decided the game needed some padding. Checkpoints are actually fairly dispersed and whilst there are difficulty spikes, they spike in a way that's pleasant and not frustration inducing.

A lot of the adult themes are also maturely handled without sounding hamfisted or gratuitous. Having finished God of War recently and being left generally non-plussed by its supposedly wonderful story and writing, I am enjoying TLoU's story and character interactions so much more. Yeah the subject is cliched but Joel and Ellie's journey still has a lot of weight to it.

That's why it's the all time favourite of many people.

Am also loving Borderlands 3 after picking it up on sale when it came to Steam. Just a whole bunch of craziness combined with epic loot drops. Mixed in with a bit of Football Manager 2019 as I try to get Manchester City relegated hahahaha. Loved Assassins Creed: Odyssey and bought the season pass for all the DLC that came with it. TLOU I started playing but never really got into it. Will seriously need to look into it further before TLOU2 is released.

My problem with Unchartered 4, was it just went on and on and on. It was quite a few hours too long. I played till the end but I am not sure I'd bother with 5 if they make it.

Wow, all these comments about games I absolutely love are fascinating.  I've said it before I think but in the movie thread.  It fascinates me how differently people think about things I take for granted as being objectively popular.

I thought TLOU was very good as well, glad I played it, would play TLOU2, but it wouldn't sit in my top 20 games.

Games I have enjoyed a lot recently:

Division 1 and 2

Borderlands

Just Cause (all)

Assassins Creed (pretty much all)

Spiderman

I really enjoyed God of War as well, but for different reasons. I liked the story, though parts I found hard to follow as I don't really follow mythology that much and find my memory of it reasonably poor as a result.

I like RPG's because it's smaller tasks, more rewards more often, easier to see progress. I guess I like games like that more, when I don't get as often to spend marathon sessions.

I also love the turn-based strategy games like Xcom.

Omg I really enjoyed Pirates. If you can find it, get Railroads, that is a FANTASTIC game too.

I used to love Civilization, but for me, it's become way over the top in terms of complexity. I understand some people enjoy that, but for me it just seems like there is too much to keep track of and feels more like a simulator than a game.

I haven't tried 6.

Loved Pirates ever since its original release on Amiga/C64 ;)

Civ 1 I enjoyed in my Amiga days, but never got into it much beyond that.

CIV2 or 3 (I can't recall, was probably the best in my opinion).

Take a look on YT at Railroads, it's so much fun.

I too find some of the discussions fascinating. I tend to agree with you that Uncharted 4 got a bit too long and, IMO, they also over-milked the sliding and rope mechanics. Towards the end, some of the difficulty spikes also got obnoxious. God the grenade spams on the final level....

But I find it interesting that, given your professed distaste for padding, you are nonetheless enjoying the AC games. I've only ever fully finished one AC (the one set in Victoria England) and almost finished the one that had Leonardo da Vinci in it. The amount of padding in both games were almost unbearable. The former's saving grace was that the story was reasonably interesting plus it was a genuine technical marvel and I wanted to drool on the graphics produced by my then amazeballs 1080 video card.

I bought both AC: Origins and Odyssey and frankly couldn't get through more than 10% of either before I was bored to tears. The characters were cardboard shallow and the enormity of the open world maps added to my stress rather than creating any sense of variety. It's safe to say that I fundamentally abhor Ubisoft's notion of what's a good game. I find Division 2 quite fun but only because of its cooperative PvE gameplay.

I too loved Spiderman but again it was too padded with boring side quests. Still playing through Witcher 2 and loving every moment.

None of the characters in AC game are particularly good. I am not sure, honestly, how they could keep anyone interesting in a game as huge as both of those. I finished Black Flag, and if you haven't tried it,  I recommend it. I also finished the Victorian one. It was about the right length. I am not sure how far though I am in Odyssey, but I am very much enjoying the combat. I like "bases" and being able to sneak around and complete those without alerting (same with just cause, batman and Spiderman games), and I am enjoying the other assassin's battles. I could pass on the water-based missions. I likely won't finish it, (and certainly won't be able to 100% it) but it's the kind of game I can play that demands 100% of my attention, which I felt I needed as I feel like I have been working 24/7 for the past 2 months.

I agree there is lots of padding, I am not sure why it doesn't bother me as much as other games. I am still finding side missions "fun".

I tend to "burn out" on longer games anyway, take a long break and complete them much later on. I'd guess I have around 8 games partially completed right now. I think I've had about 3 or 4 bites of Witcher 3. I like it, but I don't rate it as highly as others.

My wife has been playing Ori and the Will of the Wisps. It's MASSIVE as well. Loads of options for how you want to play it, and the gameplay has developed nicely over time.

Edit:

I think my issue with padding is more if hundreds of activities are REQUIRED to progress the game. For games like AC, I think it's a case of them being truly optional. OK you won't be as strong, or have as many skills, but it's a compromise.

With Uncharted, the story was never-ending.

for me I think I enjoyed Uncharted 4 so much because I was already so invested in the characters and story from the previous games that it felt like the whole thing breezed by. Whereas The Last of Us by comparison felt like trying to jump into uncharted 3 or 4 with no build up and I had no attachment to any of the story or characters and the writing wasn't good enough to get me on board.

I agree in general about the Assassins Creed games, I really enjoyed the first couple but that was at a time in my life I could dedicate more hours to each game and so they didn't feel like a chore, despite trying the new ones I have never managed to get more than a few hours in before they start to feel like a box ticking exercise.

Mentions of Sid Meir's pirates above have me itching to play that again though, loved that game. Assassins Creed black flag could have been a modern version if not for all the pesky assassin stuff on land in between the actual piratical gameplay!

Recently I have been really enjoying more free form survival-esque games like Journey to the Savage Planet, Raft and Animal Crossing (no chance of failure, but otherwise it plays pretty similarly to a survival game), things that I can sink into while watching a movie or something in the background.
