Unfortunately this generation only provided enough compute power to either

  • Push more pixels. 1440p checkerboard being the most favoured resolution on the Pro/X mid generation refresh.
  • Increase refresh rates while maintaining 1080p resolution

There wasn't enough compute power to do both. With the rate in which we've bought into 4K TVs since 2014 when this generation came out, everyone wanted a 4K picture on their new TV.

My concern is that we will see it again with the next generation. Developers are likely to use the extra compute power to deliver native 2160p games rather than increasing refresh rates to 60fps or greater.

I think there is enough grunt to do 1080 @ 120 or 4K @ 90 surely?

I have never owned a gaming console, but we are considering getting my son one for his upcoming (July) birthday.  It seems that the PS5 won't be out in time for his birthday so we might go for the PS4.

Historically what happens with the games etc once a new model is released?  Will we be left with a console that rapidly becomes orphaned?  I'm not sure how these things play out.

I guess my question is: should we wait?

Personally not worried about it being the latest and greatest tech, just don't want to be left with a dud that we have to upgrade again in a few years.

Should you wait? I would, more longevity, backwards compatibility. Higher price, there are going to be some PS4 Pro's getting sold (mine included), which if you aren't after new, will be good value, but, it would depend on budget. I'd say it's exceptionally likely you'll be parting with $1300 to get the new gen console, an extra controller, and a couple of games, given $599 USD is the expected RRP. Even with a bundle at launch you might struggle to do better than $1200 would be my guess.

Comparatively, you could see some amount of change from a PS4 Pro second hand with a controller and some games.

Do you really think it will be $599? I would be surprised if it was more than $499 USD, and should land ~$900 NZD after GST/exchange rate

The last one was $400 USD, so $499 COULD make it work, Sony may consider the price drop re C19, but it's been made pretty clear by both companies they will be more expensive than prior generations. I don't think $499-599 is outside of expectations.

I am expecting some $999 and $1099 bundles..

The new gen is like getting a Ryzen 3700x and a 5700/xt depending on xbox or ps.

There is a lot of power in the next gen package, but like Senecio mentioned it will be used to push better fidelity rather than fluidity. Expect (true)4k 30/60fps and maybe the odd game supporting 1080p120Hz. It will always vary as the use of dynamic resolution is increasingly being pushed to keep the ‘standard’ fps locked in.

I wouldn’t be getting a current generation at all as they were technically limited when they first came out and will increasingly devalue as soon as and after the release of the new gen.

If you’re worried about game compatibility though, don’t be. Vast majority will be playable natively on next gen.

Depending on age, stage and gaming preferences, I wholeheartedly recommend a Nintendo Switch for kids. And adults, frankly.

That's pretty decent advice to at least consider.

Is it me but for some reason I generally dislike Nintendo games in general. I much prefer to have games with better graphics and looks amazing with detailed buildings, environments etc. While I find Nintendo games to look boring and dull and takes the enjoyment out.

OK interesting, thanks. He's never had a gaming console before (me neither) so he will likely be happy with anything.  I will take a look at what sort of games they offer.  He's turning 9 so if their offerings are more kid centric that could be ideal.

What would be a good couple of games to start with?  Like are there any classics that are a must have?

I don't think the average 9 year old will enjoy Breath of the Wild. It takes 100 hours+ to complete and some of the game mechanics are complex. Super Mario Odyssey and Luigi's Mansion 3 are potentially both adult and kid friendly.
