Unfortunately this generation only provided enough compute power to either
- Push more pixels. 1440p checkerboard being the most favoured resolution on the Pro/X mid generation refresh.
- Increase refresh rates while maintaining 1080p resolution
There wasn't enough compute power to do both. With the rate in which we've bought into 4K TVs since 2014 when this generation came out, everyone wanted a 4K picture on their new TV.
My concern is that we will see it again with the next generation. Developers are likely to use the extra compute power to deliver native 2160p games rather than increasing refresh rates to 60fps or greater.
