Currently having the opposite problem with phones shutting down due to overheating.
But we too have groups of people playing at all hours of the day or night.  Raiding parties dashing all over the place.  Ever since the raids started, it's actually become quite social, whereas before that, you'd see others playing but no-one really talked much.

The first Legendary event that resulted in Lugia turning up was from 4-7am for us, yet we had 20+ people at the local park doing laps, catching everything we could with every pokestop lured.  Doing our bit for the global catch target despite it being 4am in the middle of winter.  :-)

Agreed.  But your suggestion is far too sensible.  It'll never catch on.  ;-)

Even if you had to purchase the pass for, say, 150 or 200 coins after completing the actions, that'd still be a winner.

LOL, you're right. I don't have a problem with EX passes being purchasable, except there would be a huge outcry from people calling it "pay to win". Of course, it would encourage the gym scene more because people could use gym coins to buy EX passes. Even if they are hell-bent on making it RNG, having EX passes drop rarely from raids would still make people raid a lot and reward those who are most active.

I have to say, since raids came out, Pokemon has become a whole different game for us here in Auckland. It used to be just me, my sister and my son, playing together. On the first day of raids, we showed up to a L4 (Rhydon) hoping to find a few others and saw some guys hanging around the parking lot with phones. When we approached them we recognised one of them from the local Facebook page, and our first group raid was achieved. Then he started a Messenger group and added us to it. That group became 300-strong, and the core players have formed a really tight-knit, friendly group. We have bowling nights and barbeques and picnics and people will run to each other's aid when cars break down or people need a lift somewhere or someone's guttering blows down in a storm. We've had the odd argument (like when the Valor guys got over-competitive and trod on a few toes) but we sort them out pretty quick. It's nice to have a social group of geeks that don't think you're a weirdo :)

We, in our group, freely admit that we are weirdos.  :-D

Lots of banter, especially when a Holden had to be jump started by a Ford in order to get to a raid in time.  That one never gets old.

Haha. One of ours turned up to the EX raid yesterday afternoon in a furry Blastoise onesie. It was 27 degrees. We have a guy who keeps inadvertently starting Messenger video calls. We tease him mercilessly about it :)

New round of EX passes out today.  A good chunk of the Upper Hutt crew got one, myself included.
Guess I'll be working form home on Thursday next week.  :-)

Seemingly multiple lobbies on a raid and other raids on the gym during the week prior seem to help "trigger" but definitely stick to those that are known once they start.

Congrats! We tried very hard to trigger a couple of gyms that haven't had an EX raid before. We selected two gyms (each in a different S2 cell) that qualified, then raided everything we could with as many people as possible. Both ended up with over 90 unique accounts and over 130/160 passes used respectively. One gym accrued 500+ points (number of raiders x raid level) and the other 700+. Neither was successful, despite thorough data-backed reports on Silph Road showing that groups in other places had generated an EX raid with far fewer of everything. So there is clearly another mechanic at play, but we've no clue what it could be. For now, it's back to raiding known gyms. I don't really need another Mewtwo, but we're still trying to get one for my sister. Meanwhile, one of the Valor guys in our group got his fourth and fifth passes from the one local gym that did put out.

Had our first round of sunny weather since the new Pokemon were put in, meaning the new fire/grass and ground Pokemon have been out in force, though as expected Trapinch is an extremely rare spawn.

I set up as paid scan of my hometown in order to try and get a handle on when (or if) Lunatone spawns - from information posted on TSR, it would seem that spawn is boosted by partly cloudy conditions and spawn time is generally midnight to 9am (rather than 9pm-9am as widely assumed), with midnight to 6am having a higher chance.
I saw several 5am spawns in Dunedin, but couldn't get to them as I live 20km away ..

I haven't found a Trapinch yet. Caught a not-very-good Vibrava at one of the local parks though. It's bad IV, but it means I have one for my living Pokedex and don't need to waste candy evolving one just to have it. Caught a Lunatone on the way home from watching the Auckland Harbour Bridge light show on Saturday night. Interestingly, there seems to be several Lileep spawning at a local park, even though it's currently a Yanma nest. Also on North Head, a volcanic cone in Devonport. There seems to be a specific biome where they crop up in partly cloudy weather - on walkways in parks near the sea.

Well, either I am dedicated .. or just stupid.
Woke up this morning (2am) and checked the local area scan, saw nothing of interest so headed to the toilet, got a drink and went back to bed. Decided to check Dunedin and found a Lunatone with 24 minutes remaining approx 10km from home. Grabbed wallet/keys/phone, put shoes on and was out the door ... caught the Lunatone which was level 27 and 86% IV.

Caught a Vibrava last night after work (Level 19, 86% IV) and then a Trapinch this morning (also Level 19, 86% IV) thanks to maps, so now the long walk begins.

I've figured out that the beach area is the best place to try and get both Lileep and Anorith in Dunedin, I just now need to wait for partly cloudy weather to come back and of course not be stuck at work when that happens.

Will be interesting to see what happens to the weather in game vs in real life due to the predicted significant drop in temperature over the next few days ..

Was gonna say after your previous post that if you haven't done a stupid o'clock pokemon mission for something that spawned, can you really call yourself a dedicated player?  :-p

But yes, you qualify.  :-)

LOL. I haven't dashed out in the middle of the night (kid in bed) but I have run through someone's back garden and crashed through dense native bush off the path for an Unown. Got it with just seconds to spare - it despawned before the guy beside me could click it.

Edit: It was only a couple of metres of private property, and if they'd noticed us, we were "looking for our dog".

I guess I'm not a dedicated player, there's no way I'd get out of my nice comfy bed to chase imaginary creatures! laughing I'll get them eventually, on my own terms.

While relying on others to scan Dunedin (ie, I dont have my own scanning infrastructure), Unown will continue to be my white whale

I believe I will only get when we get some kind of event .. ie, a future community day perhaps?

I'm really hoping for an Unown event at some stage. They don't have to be super common, but their current rarity is ridiculous. What's the point in having a badge for all 26 when you can literally only find one every six months and only if you use a tracker?

So newest EX Raid pass is out for this weekend; and it seems the criteria is "spin a Photodisc at a gym at any point from July 2017"

I did not get one, and so glad I do not care about trying to get Mewtwo
Niantic keep on changing the rules and im not running around trying to trigger EX raids when published rules aren't being followed (repeat comments mentioned several pages ago)

On a positive note, I am at 89 Hoenn Pokemon after using the last day of my paid map of home and Waitangi day to chase spawns that would give me candy as well as finding a couple of evolved forms; did find a few spawn spots that are unreachable without trespassing and in cloudy weather spawns suck (for what I require). No shiny Aron yet, after catching 100 (or so), though I do have a 98% and a couple of 93% for evolution purposes when the increased spawns stop.
(just purchased another 7 day scan as well ... Still trying to get more Trapinch and whoever has purchased scans for Dunedin has managed to miss the CBD and it wasn't worth purchasing a scan for the missing area as it would overlap too much with the existing scans)
