Hello everyone,

Just looking for some advice on games :P My partner is getting me one for Xmas and I originally said Hitman Absolution but I am thinking of getting a PC game instead due to the back log of free PS Plus games I've yet to play. So I'm saving FPS for my PS3 so usually play Strategy and mmorpg on my PC. I currently have Guild Wars 2 and X-Com Enemy Unknown so I was thinking of........

Total War: Shogun 2 - worry's me its a little long and now with the building and diplomatic parts it may get complicated.

Civilisation 5 - I loved the third one but hated the 4th one and the 5th seems to have some mixed reviews and it looks even more complicated, more complicated than Total War: Shogun 2.

Anno 2070 - Never played these games before but I enjoy the building element focus it seems to have over the above two.

Age of Empires 3 - My favourite game but I had it before and feel like I'll probably get bored of it quickly unless the add ons offer much plus it seems to have aged a little.

StarCraft 2- Looks great and currently top of the strategy charts but I seem to quickly get bored of the games like C&C or DOW where its build as quick as you can and then spam an army, Age of Empires seems a little more tactical.

I am learning more to Total War: Shogun 2 as it does have some good elements of building, good tactical war elements, I guess I wish their was either Age of Empires 4 or Total War: Rome 2, those two games grab me more.

So just wondered what people think :) Thank you guys, oh and don't say Far Cry 3, I know its good and  plan to get it but I want to complete Far Cry 2 first :)

I used to play a lot but nothing for the past year or so (except on iPad). I enjoyed the Assassins Creed games so bought #3 for my wife to give me for Christmas.

Looking forward to GTA 5 and Simcity 5 - except there seems to be a huge controversy raging over that game having to be always on-line for DRM reasons along with no user saves and possible involuntary disaster scenarios.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Starcraft 2 - I thoroughly enjoyed for the usual highly polished blizzard story and gameplay.

Assassin's Creed - Quite enjoyed the first one though it gets repetitive... so much so that even with the new elements I'm having a hard time really getting into the second one.  I have the whole lot of them from the steam summer sales so am persevering.

Fallout 3 and FO: New Vegas - they're a bit older but these were standouts for me in the last couple of years. Well worth playing even if you didn't play the original's (but even moreso if you did, especially new vegas which was really close to the spirit of the originals IMO)

I'll throw a recommendation in for Orcs Must Die 2 as I'm playing this currently (purchased it in the last Stam sale)

Addictive and fun trap defense strategy game with third person combat. Will probably be 75% off in the Steam holiday sales, has co-op multi player. You can get a franchise pack with Orcs Must Die 1, 2 and all the DLC very cheap.

I cannot talk highly enough of Telltale Games The Walking Dead - 5 episodes of pure gaming brilliance. I played on iPad but you can get it on Xbox Live Arcade and PS3 as well, oh and on PC and Mac.

It recently won Game of the Year.

It is utterly brilliant. And that's that.

Starcraft 2: Most of the replay value is in online competitive multi player and some people say the campaign is too short, the main problem is Blizzard games are very expensive relative to specials on other games, however you can normally not go wrong getting a Blizzard game.

Civ 5: I really like Civ 4 (I didn't play the earlier ones much), we are playing some really long running play by email multi player games with friends overseas. I have only played 5 for a short amount of time, it did seem like a lot of stuff has changed/improved and quite a few things removed. It didn't really hook me though and there's no play by email so it's in my queue to play sometime single player.

Total War: Shogun 2: Some friends highly recommended it to me so I picked it up in a sale but only played it for a couple of minutes. The main problem I had is this game doesn't correctly prevent your mouse from scrolling off the screen onto your other monitors while playing, this which makes it unplayable imo, I don't feel like disabling my other monitors to play so it's sitting in my queue to play sometime. A patch may have fixed this by now I'm not sure.

Can't comment on the other two but will add if you haven't played Company of Heroes it has a good story (world war 2) based RTS campaign as well as a couple of fun game modes, I recommend you pick up the complete pack in the next steam sale - it is normally 75% off.

Of the ones you list I would go Starcraft2 or maybe Civ5.

My experience with Shogun2 is pretty much exactly the same as Ragnor's (love the steam summer sale. I have a big collection of games on my waiting to play list thanks to it. ;-) )

Anno 2070 I looked at briefly but it didn't really grab me. Age of empires 3... well I've done enough Age of Empires.
