Hi there, I recently bought a playstation 3 system from trade me. The listing said that it hardly had been used. Today it had arrived so I connected everything and behold the console doesn't work.. I've tried everything to troubleshoot and it has got me nowhere.

I'm not sure what to do.

P.s The seller has declined to give me a refund.

It sounds like you are out of luck with the seller....

If you google around, there are plenty of folks out there that repair playstations, so you may be able to get it seen to fairly cheaply, depending on the problem?

Link to TM auction ?

Can drag them through disputes tribunal but could cost more in the end and take a while.

How long have u had it?
If it was advertised as working and you received it not working then I think you are entitled to a refund.

You're not out of luck with the seller. But you will probably have to rely on legal remedies such as the Disputes Tribunal.

Also you will probably get more relevant advice if you provide more details, even including the auction number.

  • How much trading have you done on Trade Me? The better your record then the more help you are likely to get from Trade Me and other traders.
  • Why did the seller say no to a refund?
  • Professional/business or private seller? This affects some of your options.
  • What terms did the seller state in the auction or in reference to his/her profile or related to the shipping method? For example, they may have said 'no refunds'.
  • How easy is it to identify the seller? For example, is the seller address verified on Trade Me so they have a physical address?
  • Does the seller have a record of problems or refusing refunds? Negative feedback or many negative comments.
  • Why didn't you use Safe Trader? That's an option for next time.

Eep.. and for $50 more could have bought one new :(

Go back to seller and ask if they have proof of purchase, could try for warranty....

Could try this... "found that if you do the power button trick (hold it in till turns off then hold it in till two bleeps) this will still put the new super slim ps3 into factory mode to update from usb"

See if it does anything.

The console will not stay on long enough to do that. I tried what you said, but that doesn't work.

You don't have much choice. IMO get it repaired and make sure you get a report on the problem and if possible an assessment of the likely cause in writing.

If the seller is genuine then it is likely the damage was caused in transit in which case you could try claiming against NZ Post or whoever was used.

If the seller has the receipt you could try and return it under warranty to the shop.

have you tried removing the hard drive and see what happens.  Maybe he just pushed a drive in without having the proper holder for the drive and it is not sitting properly.
