Does anyone have any advice on which of these consoles is better? I'm leaning towards a PS4 as I've heard it has better exclusives, but I am attracted to the backwards compatibly of the Xbox and some of the upcoming exclusives.

For context, I used to be a PC gamer but I no longer have room for my comp in my new tiny apartment...

Completely depends on what games you like to play. And in the end, it does come down for exclusives. Personally, i am a huge fan of the Uncharted series so I went with PS4. But the XBONE has better media capabilities.

Just buy a mini gaming PC, plenty of gaming systems now come in ultra small / "Steam Machine" formats.

Xbox One S has better media capabilities, online multi player service and arguably the best controller. Games is a personal one. You pick which exclusives you like better.

Do whatever you want to do man.

comes down to games really. PS4 has some pretty great exclusives. but they are few and far between. xbox one s has better media capabilities and backwards compatibility, plus the whole buy once use on both windows 10/xbox is cool, but limited to a very few games ATM.

personally I rate them this order

1. steam machine, big picture mode, controller == perfect console, more expensive than ps4/xbox, but games are waaaaaayyyyy cheaper (most consoles games come to steam)

2. xbox one s, finally no power brick, nice system, way better OS than PS4

3. ps4, terrible OS (IMO), but has some pretty great exclusives, the last of us is my personal favourite.

Are you referring to the actual OS, or just the GUI?

xbox seems to take longer to update if you have not used it for a while and then want to play on it. Much longer downloads and more of them I find.

Are you referring to the actual OS, or just the GUI?

I guess mostly the UI for the OS. its not like the PS4 OS crashes constantly.

I went Playstation (original) to Xbox 360 and have now just gone Xbox One S

Sometimes I wish I could have both PS4 and Xbox for the exclusives on both systems, but space and money is an issue

I have both and much prefer the Xbox. It's OS is much more stable as noted above ( the PS4 is constantly crashing), and operates far better as an around media machine as well as games machine. We use it every day, whereas the PS4 might get turned on once a week.

Backwards compatibility is nice on Xbox, but what is really nice is the ability to Attach external hard drives ( I have 2 1 TB currently attached). It's true that you can upgrade the PS4 hard drive, but you can't attach externals.

There are a couple of exclusives that are good for PS4 - uncharted, singstar :) but really, the Xbox is the one to go for in my view ( and if you are buying one now I would go for the S which also has UHD bluray playback ( the PS4 and the PS4 pro don't)

And the Xbox is being continuously upgraded with new capabilities, whereas the PS4 does not seem to be evolving much at all

I'd say otherwise - they're both developing quite nicely, the PS4 4.0 update just added a much more responsive in game menu, and I believe HDR support is coming to ALL PS4s, whereas my Xbox One will never support HDR. Pick the one with the games that you want, and if you don't want it for games, buy an Intel NUC.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

HDR is useless if you don't have HDR TV, but still surprising PS4 will be getting it at 1080p. But I highly doubt this is real HDR, iirc PS4 has hdmi 1.4 and as I understand this only supports wider color gamut which I suspect what they mean by bringing HDR on PS4.

But back on thread, like everyone else said it's all about the games. I personally could have both consoles but I prefer to use Xbox as I have most of my friends to play with on that platform. Also I stopped using PSN after the 2011 attack, they handled that poorly. Also want to point out PSN has planned outages, and you rarely get these on XBL.
