So I am toying with the idea of getting either a Vive or an Oculus Rift in 2017.

I haven't actually tried any current gen VR, let alone been able to make a considered comparison between the two and I would want to do so before dropping upwards of a thousand bucks!

Is there anywhere in Auckland where I could try the above in a relaxed, low-pressure environment?

Cheers

Have a Noel Leemings. They used to have a HTC Vive setup going around the country before launch, they might still have some demo around.

Computer Lounge and Playtech both had them set up last time I was at their respective shops in Auckland, and I imagine that PB Tech has one around somewhere in Auckland too. Just give them a bell and ask - I'm sure they'd be keen to get you in the door to try it, so they can then try to sell you it.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

Cheers guys - I wasn't actually sure if they were sold directly in NZ yet anyway! Will try the usual suspects and see where I get to.

PB have the Vive set up in their Manakau and Penrose stores.... not sure about others as that's the only ones I go in to regularly.

They came into retail early December 2016 - I posted here in a previous HTC Vive discussion

If you were wanting to give it a decent go, I know quite a few people who have hired the Rift and Vive from this place on TradeMe - http://www.trademe.co.nz/services/other-services/other/auction-659537518.htm

Pricing is a bit expensive, but you have it for a week so would have a good chance to test it out

Great idea!

Definitely be worth doing something like that as could also test it thoroughly on my actual PC as well.

Cheers

You're welcome to come and try one of the Vive's down at VirtualWorld down in Fort Street in the CBD - we have 4 sets up and running at 3x3m room scale... Just tell them Cam sent you and it's free for you to have a go :)
