Just wondering if anyone has stumbled across any information about the next generation ATI cards? I heard from a friend that they are being launched in the next month or so, but he cant find the link.. my hd3870x2 is being RA'd, and since there is no stock of the card im kinda screwed.. and need a replacement. no suppliers have stock of it so it looks like theres a new one on the horizon and the 3870x2 has been pulled.. Anyone got any links or info on codenames/numbers? The new nvidia gtx 280 dosnt look to promising from the initial benchmarks so im not looing at getting that.
How i miss www.mikeshardware.co.uk, his roadmaps were awesome!! damn him for getting a life!

edit: found it, should have guessed!! why of course its the 4870!! haha

yea i will be after the 4870 though.. well preferably a 4870x2. The 4870 has been delayed to July 8 from what i read, with no word yet on a 4870x2 but we all know its coming!

thanks for that article!

it certainly looks interesting, 2x 4850's will beat the new gtx280 with $250au change to spare! what are nvidia thinking! when the 4870x2 comes out nvidia wont have a leg to stand on.. its about time ATI had the best graphics chip, its been a 1 sided war for quite a while. don't know if ill be able to hold out, might have to get a crossfire board and buy 2 4870's instead of waiting for the x2 variant

I don't know much about video cards, however have you had a look at www.hwbot.org? People can upload benchmarks to the site, might be worth looking at.

The 4870 isn't going to outperform the GTX280, but the GTX280 is EXPENSIVE with a capital EXPENSIVE.
Fudzilla reported that the cheapest one they could find on the net was about 599 Euro's or something......

The 4870 is set to be around half that (I think), but no where near half the performance!

I wonder if the seemingly high price is a factor of the low US dollar?

Pricespy lists 280s starting at around NZ$1000 which is about the same price as the highest end gfx cards for the last few years. These were normally around the US$4-500 mark.

Nvidia are useless with their intro prices, though it shouldnt take long before they drop to ATI's level.

Gameplanet has got a review/benchmark coming up very soon on these new cards, which should make a good nz centric comparison.

edit: Benching is happening now link if you want to add a request for a specific game or something. A couple of results already posted.

Ive read somewhere, which escapes my mind atm, that these ATI cards run cooler and more efficient under load and during idle than their nVidia counterparts. However nVidia are still thrashing ATI in gaming benchmarks, but ATI's are always cheaper.

Which is why my long awaited upgrade at the end of this year will, most likely, again be an ATI :D

I do want to get an nVidia card from XFX (damn their nice packaging

) if I can afford one and wouldn't mind paying a premium, however.

Actually the new ati cards run a hell of a lot hotter than the nvidia counterparts. 84'C idle. Eeek.
However this appears to be due to bad thermal paste application, as putting on some arctic silver 5 apparently drops the temps a fair bit. Putting on an aftermarket cooler drops idle to 34'C or so.

the nvidia cards wont come down as fast as all that.....the die area is huge and that will make the GPU cost more by a long shot, unless nvidia moves to a much smaller process 45nm or lower (very unlikely) don't expect the prices to drop all that much, unless nvidia is willing to make a loss to keep AMD/ATI below them

If you haven't noticed nvidia have made price cuts official a couple of days back to put the GTX260 at $300 with the 4870. Apparently this is now cutting it close to making a loss on them, or at least giving the OEM manufacturers a hard time.

Yea they must be making a loss, because the die area of the nvidia chip is 250% that of the ati chip. i'm not sure that the manufacturers would take that much of a hit just so nvidia can stay in fromt...but that is just speculation...

The 4870's have been selling like hotcakes. It matches the GT260, and in some cases, beats it. It even gets close to the GT280 in some cases as well!

One of the biggest factors for the GT series prices are its memory bus. Its 512bit as opposed to the 48x0's 265bit. The 4870 makes up for it by having GDDR5, where the GT's only have GDDR3. But its a lot easier for nVidia to go GDDR5 than it is for ATI to go 512bit.

When all is said and done though, I'll probably buy a Diamond HD4870 XOC when they come out. Expected to be 800mhz (OC'ed by 50mhz) and the mem is meant to be 1000mhz (or 1100mhz), meaning it'll be a quick card!

One thing is for sure, as it stands, ATI are cleaning up in the price:performance ratio. 2 4850's typically beats a single GT280. That is, when Crossfire works well with the particular game.
