Hello All,
I'm considering buying a PS3 and have a question about the new 80GB model. Given that the 40GB model is to be discontinued I'm expecting that there will be a few on clearance allowing me to save about $100. So the big question is, Other than the 80GB HD, is there any difference between the old and the new PS3. I've read on the Internet that someone has measured a 10watt reduction in power consumption which they speculate is due to them using a finer process to build their CPU/GPU. But other than that, are there any published differences that anybody's aware of? Also one point I found out is that there is an 80GB version which was available in the US for some time, which has all the features of the 60GB model here.

Jovian,

From what i have read..

NZ PAL 80GB VS 40GB

Still has 2 USB ports
Still no support for PS2 games

80GB will have 1xforce feedback controller  - I need to find a 2nd website to confirm this.. so not 100% on this one.

Interesting about the power consumption drop your wrote about before..
Will have to look that up tonight. Wonder if it runs cooler?

The new 80GB PS3 comes with a DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller.
DSE have the 40GB model for $699.  Tempting, very tempting... Wink

Yeah, I saw the $699 units at DSE. Very tempting indeed. The preloved ones at EB are a bit ambitiously priced I think, not worth it even with the warranty. What about the Limited edition units, supposedly with backward compatibility for PS2 games? Also another feature that's missing is support for SACD. The 60GB model supports it.

I reckon since I'll be upgrading the HD anyway (80GB is not enough either) a 160GB 2.5" 7200 RPM unit only costs $75!! so its a no brainer really... Only thing that's left to upgrade is the DualShock 3. Well That can be sorted on trademe I think.

Thanks for the input guys
