This is out now but I don't think its worth it here:

New or improved features in system software 2.43:

  • This software update supports the release of rental content on the PLAYSTATION®Store for the Japan region. Users in other regions do not need to perform this update. However, performing this firmware update will not harm your system.

Huh?  How can they make it an optional download for non-Japan region users?  Every update in the past has been compulsory if you want to keep using the PSN features.  Have they made it otherwise?

you need this update if you want to get Life With Playstation.

why they made it optional i dont know: probably because of the messing around with 2.40/2.41 etc etc

That's not true.  I don't have the 2.43 and I've downloaded LWP.  They made it optional because it  would be silly to make the whole world download the update when it only applies to Japan.

fair enough, i was under that impression because folding@home didnt ask to update untill i'd done a system update from 2.40 to 2.43.

someone around here has a signature with the quote "a closed mouth gathers no feet"... seems to apply to me more and more these days :D

I think they just came out at the same time, so a bit of a coincidence.  I didn't have F@H installed at all, so it installed LWP immediately.

Why update to 2.43?  Just felt you had to? :D
