I'm so out of date on gaming these days its not funny!

We've subscribed to Origin for FIFA (for my boy) and Steam for Dirt Rally (for me) but we're looking for something we can play locally against each other.

The last time I did this we'd lug our 17" CRT's and desktops to each others houses. I think I still have a Quake disk somewhere.

Are there still games you can play multiplayer on your LAN or is it all online only now?

My kids have LAN parties about once a month for a whole day. Either hardwired to a router/switch or on WiFi. They bring their laptops or sometimes a desktop. They play Civilization, Age of Empires, League of Legends, Fortnite, etc and use the Internet where they require access to a dedicated server.

But they probably spend more time playing board games.

Still LAN games, but req internet for verification or they enable a "private" server online that you use.

I was still having LAN's until I sold my gaming PC. Most of the games were via Steam online though.

I suppose my question is more to do with the subscription model these days.

If I buy something but want to play against any of the other devices in our house do they all need their own steam accounts and copies of the game ?

Send obvious really.

Yes, a few games allow you to share to other Steam accounts but they are few and far between.

Generally, no. There are some work arounds for some games but nothing official.

If you're talking about things like Steam Family sharing, which we make use of in our household, then only one person can access the games in the sharer's library at one time.

So no one account can't be used in this way
