I just pre-ordered this great game and was wondering if anyone else in geekzone world has or is going too? Or was a fan of the first Natural Selection?
I have the best memory's of the original game (which was a halflife 1 mod, the 2nd game is stand alone), seriously no game has come close to the originality and excitement that game had. And it also has some pretty impressive stats to boot: had over 2 million downloads, and had been played for 2 billion player-minutes. NS2 can be had for as little as $30nz, thats a crazy price for what is going to be a great game..

For anyone that dosnt know, this is a Marines VS Aliens multiplayer only FPS/RTS game. Each side has a commander that has a top down view of the game, for the marines the commander dishes out orders, weapon & armour upgrades, buildings, medikits  etc etc. Everyone else on that team is a marine with a FPS view. The aim of the game for them is to eradicate the aliens, the thing with this is its a resource management game as much as a FPS, control the resource points or your money trickles to nothing and you get no decent weapons to defend yourself, or tech upgrades to get higher spec gear.

The alien side is a different beast altogether, there are 4 classes of aliens each with there own abilities. They build hives which increase there abilities and unlock other extras for there side. They also have a commander (new for NS2) im not entirely sure what the role entails as it hasn't been made clear yet but it will be similar.
I cant empathise how awesome this game is! and cant wait to get my hands on it :)

Heres a trailer of the original game which demonstrates the play mechanics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJbR7wUoNBg&fmt=18

And a trailer for Natural Selection 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_H7prHUApzs
That trailer is done in-engine, only thing that's not going to be in the game is the Onos ducking under the door and the vents rattling on the door as its smashed in.

First in-game shots are out of the marine models.. I thought this was concept art at first but its not! Quite impressed, and pretty good for a team of 5 developers! Not a big fan of the face textures but there are going to be several to choose from

oww :( it would be fun to have to use the guns sights, imagine it, an alien is rapidly closing in on you ask you spam not sure where the bullets are going, after dispatching him, you see a lonely gorge at the end of the corridor, sight in, and blow his bollocks off.

well thats how i see it in my head anyway :)

The pre-alpha of the mapping tools went live yesterday to pre-orders. The NS2 community has jumped on them and has already came up with some amazing designs! (the editor has been opened more than 10,000 times within the first 12 hours of it being released)

The editor itself is awesome, it is ahead of anything out there, it resembles Hammer in a way but is a lot easier to use, it has its bugs as you would expect with a pre-alpha, but what is already being made is baffling!
See how easy it is with these two tutorials: link

These shots are in engine, realtime, community maps in the making. they arnt mine, my skills arnt up there yet, ill hopefully post my own shot sometime soon!

Fair enough. It is going to be integrated with steamworks, so yes it should have there server lists and friends etc etc. I can understand why people would hold off on buying through the company but in reality UWE are not about to defecate all over there existing fanbase that has pre-ordered, the pre-order keys will be incorporated into steam, just like has happened with other games that have used a pre-order system like this.

Thought id reopen this gem..

With less than 24hours to the alpha is launched who can i expect to see playing this? Anyone planning on hosting an alpha server?

A lot more info/pics/videos have been released since i last updated this thread so if your interested in the game head on over to the NS2 Website, for the next 24hours you can get the Special edition for $39.95USD, which gives you access to the alpha and other perks. The normal edition is only $19.95USD, but doesn't allow access to the alpha (they start playing in the beta), the special edition will be discontinued in 24hours and the price of normal edition is going up.

Yeah they are pretty good! Especially considering the engine was made by a team of 5 from scratch..

The Alpha launched a couple of days ago, it has its fair share of problems but thats what you can expect from an Alpha (However some people seemed to expect a fully working game, the NS2 forums are a mess!). Cant wait for the game to progress Laughing.

I managed to have a game last night on Telstraclears ON3 server, good first taste of whats to come..

I do all of my gaming on my PS3 currently - I stopped PC gaming years ago..

Its just gone alpha, this phase should last a couple of months.. Beta will be another couple of months on top of that.. So i expect 1.0 to be out within 6 months..
Theres a lot of optimizing to come yet, hard do say what specs you will need.
