Hi all, with Play TV and various other services imminent on the PS3, I want to upgrade my internal hard drive and not have to do it again for a couple years. So thinking a modest 1TB!

Does anyone know if 1TB is supported by the PS3, what spin speed 7200RPM or 5400RPM is supported and if any manufactures are making a 2.5” SATA drive small enough to fit in?

Google searches have uncovered 500Gb is the most confirmed size (2yrs ago), 7200 is very bad, makes the system too hot and height size has to be 9.5mm. I cant find any manufactures conforming to, they are only 12.5mm

Any confirmed installs appreciated and pointers to NZ shops stocking the units please.

Hi I have spoken to Sony at great length over this I believe it may work but they only recommend up to 500 gb. The tech guy indicated it puts a strain on the console going larger "his words not mine".

And no point going 7200 over 5400, apparently makes extremely little difference on the PS3. Apart from the 7200 causing a little more heat.....

Could ask someone like Playtech to throw a 750GB/1TB into a display/demo PS3 and see what happens......

750GB will fit, but 1TB won't due to the 12.5mm height difference, unless you say...took out the HDD case and shoved a few bits of paper underneath it, then it would fit...but that's a really dodgy way to to do it!!

XPD is right about a bit more heat, but it's marginal, I'm running a 320GB 7200RPM in my fat PS3 and it's fine!!!!! In fact most of the articles I've read say that a 7200RPM drive in the PS3 decreases loading times(I haven't really noticed tbh)

Oh, forgot to mention, some people have been using 1TB HDDs with a longer SATA/Power cable so it sits outside the Playstation

This guy reports less than a 5 deg C difference over a 7200 vs 5400RPM, still well within operating temps
And also some benchmarks

I'd say ramp up a 750GB drive :) or wait till some consumer grade 9.5mm 1TB drivers are released(might be ages, they need to drop one platter..... and boost capacity on the others

Not internal, but why not add a 1TB external drive formatted in Fat32 to the PS3?

Thanks for all the replies people, looks like 500Gb is still recommended, 750Gb is doable and 1TB has to be external for the time being. Like the one I have connected currently :)

Not sure if it makes any difference but I have Fat 60Gb version.

You could get the Seagate Momentus, a hybrid SSD/hard drive, it's 9.5mm high, $218 at ascent.

Also, apparently these drives help a bit on speeds for games on the HDD but not any that are disc based, they won't be any faster. Someone mentioned 50odd seconds for loading the Nurburgring in GT5 went down to 30odd seconds.
