I am planning to start World of Warcraft from scratch.
(As I am currently using my friend's account to play, since he bought all the expansions and does not play any more)

I felt like I wanted my own account, and was wondering how much it would cost in total..?

Buying one expansion gives you a free month right? So in theory, I should buy the original, play for a month and buy burning crusades and play for a month and so on..?

Any tips anyone? :P

It'll cost you around $30NZD IIRC, which is your monthly fee.

You get one month free only - not per expansion (unless theyve changed it).

So if you bought the boxed game from EBGames, you sign up, enter your CC, you get a free month.

Its a great game, hope youre single with no comitments anywhere... :) Id love to play again but with a family and fulltime work, dosent leave a lot of free time :)

I checked on Blizzard, it's gonna cost me $180 to get the full game + 1 month free.

That is really expensive.. I mean I bought Starcraft 2 last month for $110 and I'll have the game forever..

But WoW.... Damn, maybe I'll stick to playing on my friend's account lol.

Oh, btw I'm living with my wife, and I work 9-5 everyday heheh.

yeah one month free total, not per expansion.

the wow + burning crusade battelc chest box: $65
lynch king ~$70
cataclysm ~$60

so total around $200.

and then you can buy a membership card for 60 days for around $45 or pay online with credit card.

its not a cheap game. and it does get boring after a while (it took me about 3 to 4 months until i was completely sick of it)

It's an expensive time sink.

Avoid!

Also if you do start your own account find someone to do a recruit a friend, that will give you 3x experience up to level 60 if you are grouped with them, makes it alot quicker getting up higher.

I'm in the same boat as you just minus the familyright now!

If your looking for someone to play with I'm ally on Nagrand & have a few spread over the levels.

Alot of the time its easier to buy all 3 in one go, this gives you access to all the races instead of just the vanilla ones

$56 - For 3 months if you pay online via credit card.

$50 - World of Warcraft Battlechest -

# World of Warcraft complete game

# World of Warcraft Expansion: The Burning Crusade complete game

That would be enough to get you started, the level cap would be 70 with Burning Crusade and somethings wont be available, but by the time you get to 70 you can then decide if you want to purchase the next expansion :-)

Some more pricing-

Wrath of the Lich King - $50 - up to level 80

Cataclysm - $50 - up to level 85

For the software I got my pricing from pricespy, but if you buy through the Blizz store it's even cheaper :)

Software - $150 all up

BTW To get the free month you have to buy some game time, I found that out the hardway (way back in 2004) ;-)

The game exploits a human psychological weakness to intermittent variable reward (also known as intermittant reinforcement).

This the same principle that makes gambling, slot machines, twitter or facebook games compulsively addictive to many people.

Play something like Mass Effect 1 & 2 or Borderlands that has a true ending imo.

This thread seems full of anti-WoW trolls.

Anyway, yeah its an expensive game. But there is more content in this game than almost any other. If you decide to level slowly and not zerg up through instances you can really enjoy the storyline that underpins each expansion.

If you play hard then it'll only take you a few weeks to get to max level. At which there is still a tremendous amount of content to enjoy.

This game rewards time and patience and punishes those without. A lot of people hit max level then discover they have to grind armor to get into Heroic Dungeons and then farm that to get into raids. Some try skip and farm PVP stuff but that'll just get you group kicked when someone checks out your gear. (Note if you quest from 80-85 you can largely skip the first gear grind and you also just made 6k gold)

The game is a massive time sink, and costs $20 a month. However thats its point, and $20 a month for the amount of time you can get from it is cheaper than renting a movie. Family is more important, but you don't spend your whole life hanging out with them.

My final point is if you don't mind being one of the original races then you could just buy the 1st game, level to 60, buy BC, level to 70, buy WoTLK, level to 80 then buy Cata. Spread the value out over the course of a month or two.
