Just a question anyone might know about this topic.

Version 3.65 software update for PS3 appears to have nothing useful and some reports of glitches actually making it worse than before.  I don't really want to download it.

Is it obligatory?  I can't see anything that makes it optional myself....

They're always optional. I held off 3.21 for a long time, but eventually got sick of not being able to access PSN so gave in.

What do you see that makes you think it's obligatory?

Obligatory to me means you have to download it to access PSN, PlayTV guide, Qriocity, VideoZone.... ANYTHING Online.

Voluntary/Optional would mean you could still use all features of PS3 without having to download.  They may have done this before with ver 3.56???

let's try this: compulsory, no exceptions. (if you want to get into PSN, PSStore)

to play games it's optional

Ok that answers my question.

Sometimes it's so hard to get a straight answer off the net.  There's so much fabricated rubbish it drives me mad.  The difficulty is if there really is a problem with an update, you won't get it from the PS3 website!

Cheers

I see they've released 3.66 now!

I'm pretty sure just about all of the updates are obligatory then (in your words). Almost all of them result in being unable to sign in to PSN without updating.

Hey Bazzer,

Thanks for that I didn't notice.  I have done the 3.66 download and no probs.  Weird how the 2 updates appeared to be so close to each other (on my system).  Normally I'm not worried about updates but 3.65 I wasn't sure about for some reason.  After you mentioned it I had a look and 3.66 came up right away.  Before that I was on 3.51 I believe.

Cheers.

Is there somewhere you can look to see what features each update has?

The thing seems to need an update every few days. Crazy...

Maybe someone else has a good link that works everytime.  I have to trawl the net and the links are different each time.

Official PS3 sites have info if the update brings good news and features they want to advertise (like 3D).  If the updates fix problems that can be seen as an embarassment, you have to get the info elsewhere! (like stopping hackers and mods to the PS3)

All they ever seem to say is that they are "stability updates". The number of updates leads me to wonder how my system has been so rock solid as it's been as it'd seem to suggest it should be crashing with alarming regularity.

That said, >100MB is still a big update considering one of the earlier updates was supposed to mean they could apply smaller incremental patches, looks like the security issues nixed that idea along with the useful "recovery" menu that they took out.

Love the grammar/spelling guide!

Could you add "its" and "it's"?
