Hi,
My Linksys wireless router has given up on me and i'm accessing the internet using my Dynalink RTA1320 modem (which will probably over-heat soon).

So i brought a TP-Link W8960N. I have been having real trouble trying to set the router up. I can't log into the router using 192.168.1.1

I have tried to reset it (holding reset button 15sec, power off keep holding for 15sec, power on keep holding for 15s) but no luck! Even tried a 60/60/60 reset as well.

I have connected two different laptops via Ethernet cable to the router and used the default 192.168.1.1 to connect to the router. No Luck. While doing this i noticed the LAN lights on the router all flash and then the LAN i've connected too stays on. When all the LAN lights flash i get the "Local Area Connection" A network cable is unplugged pop up on the laptop. I have tried 3 different Ethernet cables. I know 2  work as i'm connected to my modem and writing this using one of them.

Local area connection on the laptop (TCP/IP) is set to automatic IP and DNS. Have tried setting the IP and DNS to something in the range of the router (e.g. IP = 192.168.1.2, subnet 255.255.0.0 and gateway to 192.168.1.1)...still no luck

Have ran the easy setup software and get this error "Please make sure router DHCP server is enabled" and then the Local area connection pop up on the laptop says the connection has limited or no connectivity. I then tried a ipconfig/all and my IP is 169.254.35.207. I'm assuming the DHCP is part of the problem as the laptop is not getting assigned a proper IP address??

Anyone have any ideas as to how i can log into this router so i can configure it?

Or is the router rooted?

Cheers

Did you purchase it new, or could there be old settings on the router?  The standard method to reset the router to factory settings is to hold the reset button down for 5 seconds - it should power down and restart.

I presume you have tried working through the manual ...http://www.tp-link.com/resources/software/201011215522918.pdf

If after hard reset you cannot connect to the device using default admin/admin user/password it sounds like a warranty claim.

Just as a matter of interest have you tried ipconfig /renew when the modem is connected LAN port to LAN port with your laptop?

If after this youe PC now has an IP in the range 192.168.?? then try logging on.

I have used the manual to get to this point.
Will try ipconfig/renew

Reset procedure for the TP-Link router is holding the reset button for 15 seconds

http://www.tp-link.com/en/article/?articleid=109

Done it...still nothing

Also tried ipconfig/renew...nothing

However, got home this afternoon. The router was unplugged and turned off. Powered the router up and success! Got internet access, logged into the router and changed setting. The connection lasted maybe 30mins and now the router is doing what i have described in my first post (lights blinking and unable to log in).

I think i going to take it back tomorrow!

try manually setting the PC IP to the 192.168.1.2-255 range, then see if you can connect.  Seems DCHP on the router not working for some reason

NOte should be a lan cable straight from LAN port on router to LAN port on PC ... nothing else at this stage

Sounds rooted !  Ask for a swap - this is not usual - these devices are pretty sound by all the research I did before buying.
