I’m about to install a Signet ST2206 and wondering where the best location for the master filter/splitter is:

On the ST2206 in the patch panel located in the garage with the modem,

Or up 30m of CAT5e in the Demarc point on the side of the house?

It would be a lot of extra work to place the filter at the demark when the ST2206 is designed to have the master filter fitted to it.

Just put it on the ST2206. What's your reasoning behind why you would put it anywhere else?

Reading through old posts, most look to suggest placing the master filter/splitter in the Demarc point (one of the photos of a newer Demarc point looked to had a location at the top for the master filter/splitter to sit in).

Because that is easier than stuffing it behind some random outlet in a house without structured cabling.

Oh ok, I’m replacing the 4 wire master filter/splitter I stuffed behind my test point 6 years ago when I moved into the house.

However, if you have phone wiring split off the incoming line at the demarc then you either need to move those to your cabinet or put the master filter at the demarc.

Time to find a new industry!

If your phone wiring leaves from there then you don't really have a structured wiring installation.

Plus you will have problems when fiber comes along unless you let them install a new run back to the copper point of entry, which is often nothing to do at all with the fiber one so dual cable is not always an option.

Sometimes the structured cabling coexists with the old phone wiring.

Time to find a new industry!
