I'm good up to a point.

What would this config look like in network terms from the fibre port on the wall to the router:

Guessing -> Ethernet to the Microtik switch (which is acting like a sort of modem and establishing the connection?) and then ethernet connect the Microtik to the D-Link Router's WAN port?

Pretty much. It is effectively invisible, just strips the tag on incoming and adds it back on for the outgoing. D-Link can then authenticate as if it is an untagged connection.

Forget about the technical limitations of this thing... Look at it!! Looks a drone or something, I can't believe they make routers that look like this!!!!

Sorry, very unconstructive... But to reiterate what everyone else says, it's a hunk of sh1t if it can't tag a VLAN.

Why not put a support call into d-link and see if the Singapore vlan firmware is ok to install for NZ?

It becomes a fully transparent device that simply adds and removes 802.1p tags.

I sent them an email yesterday but haven't had a response yet. We'll see if I ever get one. I don't expect too much from mass-market gear makers.

I like it because it looks strange. :-)

But in any case I'm seeing all the speed I was hoping to see and with the HG659b in bridging mode everything seems to be running more or less exactly as I wanted it to. The issue was reliability and I've been 36 hours without a restart of the HG659b to make it stop being slow.......which is a victory in itself.

There isn't really such a thing as bridge mode in the UFB world - if you've got another router in front it's highly likely you're running a double NAT setup which is less than ideal and will likely break some services.
