cyril7: Hi, your next best option is the hAP^2, it's got the IPQ4018 quad core arm CPU with heaps of welly, and a 2gig path between CPU and switch, so will do full Gig with its eyes closed . Has ac wireless but at $150 retail it's a steel for it performance even if not using the wifi.

With the recent shortages the hAP^2 has been my go to and so now dozens in service and no regrets.

Well, if you don't have to deal cleanly with dynamic IPv6 prefixes, maybe an alternative. But not for me.

The RB5009UPR is back in stock at Go Wifi (the one with PoE on all ports), unfortunately they seem to be perpetually out of stock of the cheaper UG version.

Oh well, one can never have enough PoE...

I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but is there anything better in the SOHO range? I am wanting to replace my EdgeRouter 4 and looking for something powerful enough to manage custom configurations but want something supported with a warranty since myself and the SO primarily WFH, so that rules out anything sense-ual...

Glad to see this thread still alive.

I found Ubiquiti from this thread and using Edgerouter lite for sometime until it stop working. Bought myself Ubiquiti dream machine pro October 2021 but it seem it just lasted 14 months and last December when issue first started it randomly shutting down by itself. Googled it and seem I'm not the only one having this issue.

Wondering how many people in here using UDM pro and if anyone having similar issue of it shutting down itself?

I had not the problem but I assume the edgerouter lite’s internal USB stick died. It is common when packet analyzing and logging is left always on in the router‘s menue. You could reanimate it with the default recovery firmware and procedures via it‘s RS-232 console interface or when reloading the f/w to a new stick (max. 4GB capacity). No experience with the UDMs since I don‘t like UniFi - maybe the same failure cause like the Edgerouters.

I had to send back one Edgerouter Lite for warranty replacement when its internal USB stick died. The new one obviously had a better quality USB stick, and has been fine. On my second ERL I made sure to not write to the USB stick unless strictly necessary and it has been fine too - it may already have the better USB stick as it was a later production run. When the first one, which was very early production, started giving trouble, I was able to use the recovery procedure via RS-232 and reflashed it several times, after which it ran again for a while (a number of days) before giving problems again. I never replaced the internal USB stick, but I did open it up to have a look and you need a special small size USB stick to fit the available space. It would be worth doing the fix if you have an RS-232 console cable, as ERLs are nice routers. I have retired one of mine in favour of a faster Edgerouter 4, but the other one is still going.

It is actually really simple to replace the USB stick inside Edgerouter Lites - I still keep a recovery image here for it: https://files.murfy.nz/ER-e100.v1.10.9.5166937.img.tar.gz

You just need a 4gb or higher flash drive that'll fit. I think I used some Sandisk USB 2.0 jobbie when I did some and from there just use Belena Etcher to write it to the drive. You can also expand the root EXT4 filesystem to fill up the drive. Boot it up, and follow the standard firmware upgrade procedure to bring it to the latest firmware. No serial needed.

But as I've said multiple times these days I wouldn't purchase or use an Ubiquiti Edgerouter due to the abandoned nature of them. Firmware updates are just very minor security releases and the Debian release is incredibly outdated now. Their last patch fixed some CVE's that could lead to remote code execution that were up-to 3 years old and that is most certainly not what you want in a Linux computer connected directly to the internet. Sure, risk of compromise is low as they're normally firewalled off but not zero. For the Edgerouter I'd consider a Mikrotik to be an almost drop in replacement.

ah I didn't know that I might be able to restore the ERL. Will give that a try when I have time :)

Nowdays I prefer something I can setup and almost forget (other than maintenance and update) more on stability and durability. I will give Mikrotik a look.

Off the back of this thread and a couple of other things ordered a basic Mikrotik to replace my ERL.

Then logged into the ERL to check any settings I would have to move across and there was an update waiting to be applied.....

@huckster The updates are minimal and the latest ones were just sorting a GUI bug along with UISP changes. It is still really not being maintained.

Since no-one tried to talk me out of it, my RB5009upr arrived this week and I have been trying to set it up around work... definitely been a bit of a learning curve coming from edgeos, but starting to get the hang of it, and damn is routerOS powerful!

Got the basic config done, just trying to setup VLANs and getting my head around the bridge VLAN filtering so it should hopefully be ready to plug-and-play in prod...

Once you do learn it - you won't regret it. I'd also recommend taking backups of your configuration often and also enabling "Safe Mode" in Winbox when working with it so you don't mistakenly lock yourself out:

I had to test my backups the other day after modifying a firewall rule which took down my main VLAN + locked me out of the router - wasn't fun!

Hey team, currently using 2D Fibre with a 7530 and a 7490 as mesh master and mesh repeater.

The set up works well except in my home office in the shed (I suspect because the shed has galvanized steel cladding).

So i'm going to run ethernet to the shed and put an AP there.

Any suggestions on router (would need to support vlan tagging) and AP I should be looking at? Budget is $500-$1000 I guess, appreciate good gear costs. Quite like the mesh network currently so would be good to have similar functionality if possible. Would be good if it was unobtrusive either roof or wall mounted too.
