I bought a cheap 24 port switch and it was noisy and died after a couple of years.

Spent a bit extra on the HP procurve 24 port gigabit switch and it was fanless with a lifetime warranty. 8 port much cheaper, not sure about the warranty but a good quality switch /router worth their weight in gold.
