I have the weirdst thing happening with my 2.5 year old HP Spectre Ultrabook which runs a Dual Band Wireless AC7260

From time-to-time it's not connected to my WXC modem/router. It connects to every other wireless network I encounter (office, client's office, even the hotspot my android phone can create) . Everyother  other device in the house including laptops, ipad, and phones connect  happily.

Spent 90minutes on the phone to tech support at WXC last night and they are equally stumped. The laptop connects happily - but no internet is available. The tech logged onto my router and could see that there was some connectivity - but 80% plus packets were lots.

We tried swtiching DNS and also the adaptor settings to no avail. I tried reloading drivers - its up to date. Obviously everything was rebooted multiple times. Told the laptop to forget the connection - he renamed the modem and changed password. Nada

This morning I disconnected the laptop and took it elsewhere - didn't connect to the Internet. Returned home plugged it back into my Plugable dociking station http://plugable.com/products/ud-3000/ and it didn't connect to the internet via wireless.

Had a brainwave - disconnected the docking station - it connected no problems!

Re-connected the docking station - still working.

Is it even slightly possible that the docking station (which I've used with the laptop since I bought it - because I need an external monitor, keyboard, mouse and more than 2 USBs) could somehow be the problem?

Last night when I had so much trouble - when I initially logged in - I was connected long enough to download gmail - then it cut out and stayed out. The docking station is a little slow to boot - I'm wondering if as it  came out of sleep mode it some how is interfering with the wireless?

When my computer is out and about connecting to other  WIFI - I'm not using a docking station. When it connects to WIFI in the lounge I don't use the docking station. Up until getting Fibre about a month or so ago the modem was near the laptop and I was using ethernet to connect.

I moved the box when Fibre came and since then I've had issues - and since then I've used the combination of dociking station and wireless.

There appears to be correlation - is it possible that there is causation?

USB 3.0 can totally trash the 2.4GHz band when nearby it. If you are on 2.4GHz and the docks connection is over USB 3.0 or you have USB 3.0 devices connected to the dock then I can see that this is very possible.
