Just bought this modem the other day as we needed wireless for daughters smartphone.

Have just noticed that it is very hot to the touch on the top and if I lift it up the bottom is hot also.  It is just sitting on my desk, nothing on it, nothing except the desk under it.  Has good airflow.

Is this normal.  I'd say it is as hot/warm as toast as it pops out of the toaster. But then your hand gets used it.  Would be good enough to warm my hands on a cold winters day.  Hrm, not sure how much more descriptive to get.  Don't have a way of taking it's temperature lol.

Is this normal?

Yes - I have the same modem and it's fairly toasty - has been running without a fault since 2010, though, so I wouldn't be too worried about it.  I've found it fairly robust and reliable (especially for the price) - much more so than the D-Link I had previously.
