Hi all,

Curious to know if anyone else out there has mangaged to get upstream QoS/Packet Shaping working on Zyxel routers
?

Googling around doesnt turn up a whole lot except this quick guide: http://www.the-scream.co.uk/forums/t21698.html

Following that, and spending some time playing with the settings I cant seem to get it to do any form of shaping on the upstream.

Lonney.

Yes, I have managed to get it working.  My router is a ZyXEL P334W.

Does your 660HW have full-blown Bandwidth Management or just High/Med/Low priority selection?

I think the full-blown Media Bandwidth Management.. it has a wizard option for setting it up and a manual option under advanced, where you allocate bandwidth to the interfaces, then create subclasses with various options.

It's best not to use the Wizard in my experience.

I'm guessing you are wanting to prioritise VoIP traffic?

Depending on which VoIP provider you are using, you may be able to get away with simply creating a High Priority rule for "SIP" and then setting everything else to Low Priority.

Or you may have to do as I did, and set up a High Priority rule for traffic originating from your VoIP device (needs to have its own IP address), and then set up a Low Priority "Catch-all" rule for any other IP address.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi,

Tried the wizard, it had no effect on upstream.

I want to manage various protocols on the upstream such as FTP, Torrents, and give SSH a boost when things are busy... and quite possibly voip at some point too.

I'll RTFM again when I get the chance to sit down and spend some time on it.

Have taken some screen dumps of the options:

http://hydrogen.net.nz/zyxel/mbm_class_config.png

Those are the options I have.. Its not too hard to figure out what you need to put where to make it work, however,
nothing seems to work at all.

Lonney,

First you need to set up your Speed for the WAN port to the ACTUAL throughput i.e. around 80% of line speed.
For example, if your upstream speed really is 768kbps (which I doubt) then you need to set the WAN speed to 614kbps.  This sets the total BW budget available which can then be apportioned among the Classes.

Then you need to set up at least 2 Classes with appropriate BW Budgets for each.  Set the priority to 7 being the highest priority.  Then set the service up to match what you want to give High Priority i.e. SSH.  I must admit I don't know how you would identify the SSH service (by Protocol ID or port), but maybe some more RTFM will yield the answer Wink.

Then set up a Low Priority Class for FTP (which should be a pre-defined service in the drop-down box).

I must admit that your router has a few more selections per Class than mine does, so I'm guessing a little here...

Once you have 2 classes set up, then go into MONITOR mode and it will show you a bar graph of the percentage traffic for each class you have defined.  Activate an FTP upload (downloads will not be controlled at this stage), and see if the traffic increases in the appropriate bar.

If you don't see the appropriate bar response in Monitor mode, then you have not succeeded in filtering out that particular type of traffic.  It took a lot of trial and error before I was able to filter out the 2 different types of VoIP traffic that I have.  In my case, the only thing that worked was using the Source IP address, but you don't have that option because all the different services are running on the one PC.  I guess that one simple option would be to migrate those non-critical services to an old PC connected to your LAN, and keep your high-powered PC just for critical work like the SSH sessions.

There are some ideas for you, let us know how it goes.

Cheers for that,

re the line speed, my line sync's at 7616/700-768kbps ;) I get 70 to 80kb/s upstream. Which is very nice!

I have got it working with FTP at least, need to do some more config and testing to get it fully setup. It seems in the Summary screen where you allocate bandwidth to the interface(s) I need to have "Use Max Bandwidth" unchecked, checking this seems to just make it ignore any settings all together!
