Hi there.

I have just set up my brand new Modem/Router, a TP-Link, Model #TD-W8960N.

When I plug the Ethernet cable into my laptop the internet will work, yet when it is disconnected there will be no internet. Wireless/Wifi works on my phone, HTC One, no problems. This makes me think its something on my laptop, maybe I haven't turned something on/off?

It says there is Limited connectivity, but no pages load.

Im on Telecom.

Not sure what other information I can give to help you..

Cheers

Thanks John, did that and didn't say there was any problems.

I unplugged the Ethernet cable and then the Wireless worked fine on my laptop. However it lasted 10-15 minutes before the connection died (I have only done this once) both on my phone and laptop.

Plugged the Ethernet cable back in and then I can use Wireless on my phone again.

Weird. Will see if it dies again, have just unplugged the Ethernet cable again.

Is your Wifi on channel 13? Could be that that laptop doesn't have an international chipset in it.

Perhaps too much interference? Is your AP set to 20MHz or 20/40MHz? Perhaps change to the other setting to see if it solves the problem?

Tried another channel?

Not sure how to tell what channel I am using or how to change it.

Quick google search and looks like if I download the program "inSSIDer" that will tell me?

Currently wireless is still working so maybe it was just ironing out the kinks, first time being on and stuff.

I don't want to do anything I shouldn't and break it!

yep Inssider will tell you what channel you are running on. Will also show how many other networks are running on your band.

Or just log in to the router and check the Wifi settings. If the channel setting is 'auto' you could try hard setting it to 1,6 or 11. Look on Inssider and see which channel has the least amount of wifi networks running on it and set it to that.

Change the DNS on your laptop to google DNS 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4
I find I have to do this a lot with customers having issues. ( I have to do it regularly with TP Link modems )
Also change your wireless from New Zealand to USA, dont use Channel 1,2, 6,10 or 11, use something like channel 5.
Inssider is an excellent product to check spectrum around you. but I would start with the DNS

If it fix'es your issue change the DNS in your modem to Google.

I know enough to be dangerous

DNS wouldn't do anything for Wifi connection issues.

Please use the ISP provided DNS.
