I have no idea what forum this belongs in so i decideded to post it here to be safe

i brought a domain name from crazydomains.co.nz and i want to make it so that when i visit my domain it resolves to my ip address.

i've tried using a service called free dns but that didnt seem to work and now when i browse to my domain name, instead of going to my server it goes to some web page saying i've shared it (i did no such thing)

i changed the name servers on my crazydomains.co.nz account back to how they were when i got it but i imagine that takes time to propagate throughout the internet.

i have DDWRT on my router and assumed i'd be able to use one of the in built dynamic dns services on there but they all seem pretty dodgy looking money grabbers so i decided to ask here before i do anything else.

my domain name is haamfish.co.nz and from my internet connection it resolves to crazydomains.co.nz's homepage, but on my mobile data connection it resolves to a freedns.afraid.org website saying i've shared it.

For me haamish.co.nz resolves to ip 119.224.111.134 and Name 119-224-111-134.callplus.net.nz
If I browse to http://haamish.co.nz I'm getting the default IIS 8 page.
So for me it looks like it is hitting you computer.

yeah its working like that now, but if my ip address changes i have to go change the a record manually on my crazydomains account.

i wonder if slingshot would do a free static ip?

I'm with slingshot and my ip address hasn't changed in 4 years laughing

I haven't used DDWRT for years, so I don't know what it offers for Dynamic DNS providers so I'm not going to be much help. But I think finding a free one that lets you use your own domain name will be the biggest challenge.

What you maybe able to do is set up an address at a DDNS provider, for example no-ip.org.
Then set up a  CNAME at crazydomains.co.nz that points to the address you set up at no-ip.org

The above suggestion will work. If you don't like the providers that DD-WRT offers you can run a small client on most hosts that will do the same thing. I used no-ip.org and have a Linux vm running that handles most things including updating my IP.

Something to be aware of is that if you open a machine to the interweb you better make sure it's secure as people will find it and probe it.

Matt.
